Good stuff halfstoned... I like seeing people's reports, gives ideas for future rivers to try. I didn't make it out today.. looking at the online rivers gauge looked like the Otter would be a bit of a waste of times and we had friends over this afternoon so no time to go further afield. Will try to get out to the Frome before the trout season finishes there.

Certainly not drivel Halfstoned. Thanks for taking the trouble to post your adventures, I've enjoyed reading them all. The west oakment is on my list for next year. Can't believe we are at the end of another season. Had my last trip to the West Dart on Friday which was more of a farewell visit than a serious fish as the river was still really high. I also finished my season with a blank. Had so many plans this year but somehow never got round to many of them. Still maybe next year.

Cheers guys, much appreciated, I find posting good fun and useful to refer to later. I know what you mean about plans Terry, so many streams and so little time!

You might as well take up grayling fishing, a whole new plethora of flies to tie and gear to fiddle about with. It'll be the start of the new season before you know it!

First time on the Okement above Meldon this season. The reservoir is looking pretty low compared to this time last season. The lower river was also low and the midges were so bad that the friend I was fishing with ( who didn't have a midge net) decided to retire hurt after only 10 mins fishing! I ploughed on for a couple of small trout and then headed to the "high country" where the wind kept the midges away but the casting was a bit tricky. The trout weren't really in a rising mood, I think the even grey light meant that they could see me long before I made a cast ( I've often found that a nice bright day is best up here, perhaps the blinding effect of the sun makes for an easier approach). However I managed a few fish up to about 8" The real highlight of the evening for me was a fantastic close up view of a pair of Cuckoos. Often heard but rarely seen I think this must be my first real view of these birds, they hardly seemed to notice me wading in the river and flew around above my head and the male perched in a tree not twenty yards from me. I tried to take some pictures but as I moved to get the camera out he must have noticed me and he flew off, still it made the long trudge back to the car a bit more bearable. A note to anyone heading up here the car park is now pay and display before 6pm, you can't park anywhere for free these days!
