I had a lovely 2 hours on the Yeo this afternoon. The river is very low and the bank vegetation is very high and thick. Despite this I managed a couple of lovely fish, the first was a PB and the second was even bigger, very pleasing. I took my Czech nymph rod and the first fish came to a size 16 PTN variant fished as part of a nymph duo in the Czech style. I saw a couple of rises in another deep run as I made my way up the river so changed to a dry, a Cul de Canon (I only tied it last night!). The fish absolutely smashed it after I bow and arrow cast the fly under some overhanging branches. Both fish fought like buggers and it took a while to get them to the net. Pictures here ...

Im sure I'm not alone on this one , but have to admit to finding it hard to gain momentum this season. So this morning I managed to convince myself that i should steal a couple of hours on the Yeo, upstream of Uton bridge. I started on the default Duo but somehow it didn't feel right so moved to searching the water with 6x tippet and size 18 Black Gnat. Missed a number of unexpected takes but released 4 cracking fish to 10 inch.
Fish taken on the dry always look in better condition and fight harder!

Fished upstream of dunscombe bridge this evening and it was tough. My first time on this stretch and there looks to be some nice water here but hardly any rising fish tonight. Managed one small chap on a black gnat and two lost on split wing CDC, had two splashey rises to a mega may but couldn't connect. Fished up to a flat stone weir and found a fish rising in the pool below, tried various patterns without success, the fish kept rising ( a boiling sort of rise) and I thought perhaps it was taking midge pupa under the surface so I tried a small black and peacock spider and the fish took it first cast but I missed it. A fair bit of "thin" shallow water on this stretch, is this just due to water levels? I seemed to do a lot of wading and not much casting, do you cffc regulars fish these "still" areas?

I haven’t fished the Yeo, thin shallow water is always tricky but can hold good fish, I’m off for 3 days fishing on the Monnow this weekend, Sunday someone is taking me to a new private beat. He fished it a week or so ago, some really big fish holding in a very shallow long glide (well over 2lb), using their usual 14’ leaders they couldn’t get anything to rise, every offering was ignored, his friend went up to 18’ leader and caught 2 immediately I went over to the field last night to have a play with long leaders (admittedly I only went up to 16’ as I didn’t have tippet with me to increase further) on my new 8’4” 4w.... ‘twas fine, so good to go, just need the fish to still be there

I always prefer that stretch with a bit more flow going through, but at the moment we need to work with what we've got!

Tried that on Sunday morning, all the way up to Fordton Bridge. I think the weir was breached by the club last year to lower water levels above and make it more streamy. It worked a bit but like you, not much fish life evident. Only a few reliable spots through the golf course showed fish and near the milling Co. Nearly got clobbered by a wayward golf ball on the way.
Found para Adams to be reliable as ever.

Thanks for the replies guys, boisker would you fish the water in the "thin" areas or just to rising fish. Rubble do you walk up to the golf course section ? Got a bit lost at one point and ended up about 10 feet above the river with no way down! Took me 2 1/2 hours to get to the weir and still wasn't at the golf course ( certainly plenty of water for your subs with cffc). Yeoman , any flies/ hatches to look out for ? It was the evening I fished but didn't see any bwo or sedge ( this used to be the mainstay of the fishing on the Teign). Still a lovely evening and I saw a kingfisher which was nice.

If it’s really shallow I’d probably just move very, very slowly making the odd cast but predominantly looking for rises. The ideal situation would be if the bank is higher, I’d stand back and scan the water as far ahead as possible looking for any slight movement... you can sometimes just get a glimpse of a fish... and looking for rises. If that’s not possible all you can really do is move up slowly through the pool. You need to move slow enough to reduce any ripples to an absolute minimum. It’s tough fishing, for a long time I always ignored that type of water, but it’s surprising what it can turn up... and very rewarding when you pull something decent out. A beat I fish on the Monnow has a very long flat stretch (albeit slightly deeper in places) most times it’s tough to catch much on this stretch, but I had one amazing session when I found 5 fish all over 16” dotted up the pool. Saying all that I just tried the same techniques as above, bank and moving slowly through the water down on the Otter... nuffin doin...

Tried the Yeo tonight at dunscombe/codshead bridge. Not much rising but those that were proved to be a better stamp of fish than last time with two at 11" Lost a really heavy fish in the pool with the sewage outflow in it , it charged off up the pool giving those heavy lunges that the big ones use to give you heart failure and then proceeded to snap the 7x line at the water knot! Second time this year I've been broken at the join between the 6x and 7x power flex might go back to just using 6x. I hope the barbless hook falls out quickly, I hate leaving flies in fish.

Still not managed to fish the golf course section yet, is this feasible for an evening session? Would it be best to park at fordton bridge and walk down?

Driving back from Crediton this morning at about 9 o'clock and I decided to stop at folly bridge and see how low the river was. This is what greeted me. I presume it must have been morning milking somewhere, unless I missed the deluge!

"16th May 99 Fishing on the above date from just below the golf course and Fordton bridge I took 37 trout on the yellow humpty and klinkhammer(green bodied). A reasonably good hatch of Mayfly started coming of the water at about 2. 30.pm. I had several good fish through the coures of the afternoon finishing with a total of 6 fish at 14ins though nothing yet creeping up to 15ins. I am sure that someone sooner than later is going to crack the 15in mark this season. During my time on the water I noticed reasonable hatches of BWO and a few olive uprights plus large swarms of Black Gnat. Yet again the Yeo has proved in my opinion to be possilbly one of the best trout rivers in the southwest with some of the most consistent sport anybody will find in its class anywhere in England." RODDY RAE The report above is taken from the "old" CFFC website and while Rod did mention to me how good the fishing was on the Yeo I didn't really take it in all those years ago ( Women, Beer, University etc.. were getting in the way) and it wasn't until I started fishing the Yeo in Yeoford that I stumbled upon this report. I resolved that come what may I would join the CFFC and fish the "golf course" section. Well this year I finally got around to joining but realised the other day that I still hadn't fished above Kersford weir and only twice above Codshead bridge, so despite the wind and the rain and the leaves littering the still slow and low river I set out today to explore. Not surprisingly nothing was rising and to help punch through the wind I settled on the duo. One small fish dropped in the first hour certainly put a dent in my enthusiasm and then out of the blue my best fish from the Yeo this year sucked in the Klinkhammer in the pool below Codshead bridge I tried to stretch it to 13" but settled on 12 1/2". It was rather slow fishing and in four hours I only managed 6 fish but five of them were of a really good size ( another at 12" plus two @ 11") and made a welcome change after a season of mostly catching small stuff There is some challenging wading and lots of "thin" water that might fish better with more water, but there's also some cracking pools here and it must be great to fish it in a proper hatch with fish rising, maybe next year!! As an aside there is a tree down in the pool under the road bridge, one for bank clearing this year perhaps?

Nice report and pics, Chris.
Sounds like the fishing was better in '99, you can certainly get the numbers if you catch it right at Mayfly time, but 6 fish at 14 inches in a session on the Yeo is going some!

Nice report and pics, Chris. Sounds like the fishing was better in '99, you can certainly get the numbers if you catch it right at Mayfly time, but 6 fish at 14 inches in a session on the Yeo is going some! I'd be very happy with just one at that size Yeoman, I'm sure they must be in there, perhaps the Mayfly brought out the bigger fish? No doubt the fly life isn't what it was in '99 but maybe this can be brought back with the right approach. I forgot to add that aswell as the fishing I had a great view of a kingfisher, saw two dippers, three Buzzards and spooked some deer in the woods by the railway line. Perfect. Still not too sure about the easiest access for the various Crediton beats ( I ended up 10' above the river a couple of times with no way down) , I will be grilling fellow members for information when the bank clearing starts!

Many thanks to Halfstoned for posting Roddy Rae’s report from 1999 - it inspired me to choose the Yeo for Wednesday’s outing, my last of the season, from Codshead bridge up to Kersford weir. Although conditions seemed ideal, there were few rising fish, which mostly ignored my offerings until a feisty 12-incher took my black gnat around lunchtime. It then went very quiet for several hours until one of 9 ins took a CDC emerger/sedge, followed by this lovely fish of 13.5 inches. That made my day, my best for the season, until – just to prove Roddy was right – a real beauty of 15 inches: Roy

WOW , that's some fish there Roy , not a bad brace and a half for one session, well done! I've not managed to break the 13" mark this year but nice to know they're in there, maybe next season.

Thanks guys, sorry about the photo duplication, I didn't seem able to get the "reply preview" to work. Hopefully, the signs are that the CFFC rivers are returning to their former glory (or are as good as they ever were ?). Despite the desperately low water levels, this season I have had 32 fish of 11 inches or more, over twice last season's number - I would be interested to hear if others have noticed an improvement in average size ? I trust it bodes well for the future. Roy

Last day of the season and I always like to fish a club water, especially as I haven't got on them much this season. 3 horseshoes it was, and I found a few risers, starting off with a nice fish around 12 inches. The next pool also had a few risers, and a rather off the mark cast prompted this fellow to come bulldozing across from a couple of feet away.... Just under 17 inches and something of the stockie about it, although its fins were sharp? Anyhow, carried on up and had several more mint little browns, all nice and fat from a summers feeding. Roll on next season.
