Hi Folks I'm currently in the Black Hills of South Dakota and it's hot. Not unusual for the West of the USA this time of year but this year the heat came earlier and about 5C warmer. Of necessity I fish in the morning, relax in the afternoon and then fish again in the evening until I can't see to tie on a fly. Although this area is not as busy as Montana or Colorado there are plenty of fisher folks around especially on the more publicized streams. However, this is also a family friendly destination with lots for the non fishing partner and kids to do, think Mount Rushmore, and it also makes a good stopping off point on a road trip to Montana (which is what I'm up to!). No wife with me this first week of our Out West road trip she will fly into Rapid City on Wednesday. So I have fished several creeks and the fishing has been good but not yet spectacular, partly I suspect because I'm seeking out new places to fish rather than going back to the old standbys from previous trips to the Black Hills. The rivers/creeks are a little lower than normal and a little warmer so going further upstream is necessary especially looking for brook trout. The scenery is spectacular, which makes up for the less than huge number of trout to hand. Some rivers are stocked with rainbows & browns but the smaller creeks are generally not, so you will be catching 'self-sustaining' trout. Yesterday I was surprised to catch a Rainbow, Brown and Brookie all on the same small creek which is supposed to have only 'wild' fish. Historically this area of the USA did not have any native trout. Here are a few photos of my trip so far:
