Having hardly had the opportunity to fish the last 6 weeks and my better half having an op that will stop me getting out for the next month I managed to squeeze in a last minute quick trip to the Monnow. Trickiest day I've had on the Monnow, good sport for the first 2 hrs picking up about 8 fish, then a real quiet afternoon. But there's worse places to spend a day, chilling out watching runs and pools for signs of movement. The evening felt as though it could 'kick off' for the last hour or so.... warm, still and muggy with the fly life slowly building, then annoyingly a gentle cool breeze built up and the fly life slowly disappeared. The highlight wasn't catching a few beautiful brown trout but was actually lying on the bank watching a pair of Kingfishers feeding their chicks in the bank of the pool below, they put my fishing skills to shame. Obviously no idea how many chicks they had, but with clutches of 6-7 and each chick requiring 12-18 fish a day it's fair to say they'd have been a tad hungry if I was in charge
