So who has plans for 2018 and the season ahead? I enjoy an opening day cast and have headed for the Taw in recent years, but this year-weather permitting I'm going to cast off the cobwebs at Endsleigh. After that I'll take each day as it comes!

Still haven’t tried fishing for Salmon. I buy the full game licence every season with the intention to fish for sea trout... last year I think I tried for sea trout 3 times! Trouble is I probably already fish for wbt 3 or 4 times a week through May, June and July so trying to add in sea trout trips risks a divorce

Hardly surprisingly, it'll be mainly the Taw for me with a sprinkling of the Wye here and there too.

Tay/ Tummel in April. Findhorn in June. Norway in August. Some Autumn salmon somewhere other than the Lochy which we have given up after many years. Maybe a day or two on the Exe or Taw. I caught my first ever salmon on the Taw and I've not been back ,this needs addressing. Ps : I'm a very lucky boy.

I will be keeping my (migratory) powder dry until September: loch fishing in the Hebrides for seatrout and, with a bit of luck, the odd salmon. It's a long time to wait though!

Wye in April, Endsleigh in June with probably a few more trips through the year, also the Dart whenever I can. Always like to explore new waters - have never tried the Taw.

Not long til we're underway, is the snow going to play a part though?!

If the season starts on the 1st? You’ll probably be warming wading than staying on dry land... predicting -3 with windchill possibly down to -10... that’s cold by anyone’s standards

Yes, it does, well, in theory!
I'm hoping to go chase steelhead later in the year so it might be a good warm up if that is the right term.

Nice Pete, i’ve read quite a bit recently about chas8ng steelheads.... funny in the U.K. we associate extreme weather and snow with reduced chance of catching. But they definitely successfully fish through all weather in N America / Canada... but they do have fish runs that are colossal compared to ours so I guess that plays a bit part...

Was out on the Dart for Salmon on the 2nd Feb, but it was quite a bit warmer then, water temp was 5 degs, then went Greyling fishing on Tamar this Sunday and the water temp was just 2.5 degs ! Isn't cold weather meant to be good news for Salmon spawning ?
Not jealous of steelhead fishing at all.

I think cold water is good for all salmonids, it’s sudden changes in temp which normally effect feeding, so you would expect the snow to have a short term effect- as it falls and in the case probably melts 24hrs later... I guess that again is why it effects N America less... it generally just cold there in the winter

I like the idea of trying steel heading in autumn time when it gets cold, possible snow and seeing some bears too. A fish would be a huge bonus but I just want to give it a go.
So, I've sorted through my flies, my truck is back from the garage and if I wake up, there's no heavy snow and I can get to the river I'll be on the Taw to make a few casts.

Oh, what a fool am I? I had inended to mark the start of the season by a ritual of casting a line. Sadly, river levels interdicting wading and the nearest access from which I could safely extract my car being a mile from the water meant even this religious rite to honour the rive gods proved unwise. Finally, in a fit of stir-crazy frenzy, I ventured forth yesterday. Those who know me understand that, as I have aged if not before, creature comforts loom larger than fish or even fishing! I was mad! Ten minutes in, the snows descended, but I had started out....... ( If one steps back, it is amazing that trying to fish yesterday and fishing in the tropics for bone fish in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees both require us mal-adapted humans to cover every inch of skin- every orifice even- whilst 'enjoying ourselves'!!! If you can believe Darwin and concentrate only on our physical characteristics, we should be extinct!) I was stupid enough to persist. As every orifice was covered up, discomfort as I walked up-river was minimal. Then I stepped into the water!!! As I disrobed at the car, everything, bu everything, got exposed (I had had a pint before I started!). It has taken until today to thaw out. And tomorrow the weather is going to get bad!! Good luck to all for the next few days- particular good wishes to thise that have to earn a crust, and to pete- who is obviously ageing as he is hedging his bets as to whether he goes out or not- openig day with Mark on Colliford? ?

It looks like I've been beaten back which is a shame. I'd say it was too cold but I am entering my 4th day without any heating or hot water and so I feel like I have done the necessary acclimatisation!
