Being a new member of TFFC I'm contemplating fishing their waters on the Axe and I'm looking for info on the above in particular what length rod to take as I'm assuming it's more of a small stream than a river in the upper reaches also which would you head for, Winsham or the bottom of Forde Abbey
Any info would be appreciated

Hey Dave... Personally I prefer the lower end of the forde Abbey beat or at the abbey itself... but that could be in part as it is closer to me, i’ve only fished winsham a couple of times... lots of deep pools on the bends.... less varied structure than the lower end. Broom bridge is also decent for an hours fishing... Length of rod- if you post on the Taunton club page most replies will say 7’-7’6.... but I have generally fished with a 9’, 8’ would probably be about right, but I prefer my 9’ rod . I’ll fish it with an 8’4” rod this season.

I've just come back from a short (2 hour) session on the Winsham beat, it's not a bad beat but a bit featureless in places. However, it was a fantastic afternoon for me as I managed to land this beauty of a 16" Sea Trout - my first ever! It took me around 15 minutes to land it and it took a size 16 black and silver bead head nymph. To say i'm chuffed is an understatement!

Nice one pusser... i’ve only looked at winsham once. Fished the abbey the other day, before the most recent rise... it needed a good flush!
