I had a bit of a marathon session on the Taw today, a full eight hours from 9 to 5 ( birthday pass). A definite day of two halves, fished ok in the morning catching lots of small 5" to 7" fish until I came to the pool with a ladder at each end. Fish were rising well in this pool but wouldn't look at the black gnat I had on, some medium olives were hatching and a change to a soft hackle dry brought this 12" beauty to the net. Half a dozen casts later and I hooked a fish of similar size but it threw the hook just as I was thinking about unshipping the net. I worked my way up the beat catching some more small but beautiful fish and then in a lovely looking run against the far bank a tiny sipping rise produced this 11" trout. The afternoon on the bottom beat was a bit of a disaster, I was determined to catch something on a Mayfly and although nothing was actually taking the few Mayfly that were hatching, casting into likely areas produced occasional interest but I couldn't hook/land any of the offers. One good fish stuck me into some tree roots shortly after hooking and another 9/10" fish got off when the rod top got caught in the trees overhead. A change back to the soft hackle dry solved the hooking problem and some more tiddlers came to hand and then I hooked a brute of a thing in the deep pool below the bridge that shot back past me and parted the 7x leader so I packed up. Loads of medium olive spinners dancing above the river but I was too tired to wait and see if there was an evening rise. Maybe next time. It was nice and sunny in the morning but I got rained on in the afternoon, thankfully no thunder storms!

Sounds like a great day. That pool below the bridge can throw up a few surprises.

Fished from 6 till 9 tonight, not much happening but a lovely place to spend a few hours. Had a great view of a Kingfisher and caught some beautiful if small wild brown trout. I had planned to fish until last light but it got a bit cold after about 8;30 and the few fish that were rising decided to stop. A little para Adams and the ever reliable Whickhams were the successful patterns ( I think the risers were smutting) but the best I could manage was this 9" chap. River very low now, plenty of fly life about but not really surprised by the lack of activity. The first pool above the bridge with exposed beach!

Not much doing on the Taw tonight, got eaten alive by midges and I think the few trout that were rising might have been taking these. Had the odd fish , missed plenty, lost one good fish to a stray branch ( now removed) but did catch this beautiful smolt, something I've not caught since my young days on the Teign, nice to see.

Had a few hours on the top section after work, the rain at the weekend had little effect it seems. Odd fish rising here and there ( I think to afids ) but very hard to approach. If I did manage to get a take they weren't easy to hook. In the end I just concentrated on the faster water at the heads of pools with a bushy Whickhams ( at least I could see it) and this brought me 9 fish with the best just 8". Still a lovely place to while away some time and saw a Kingfisher several times which was nice

It's rather quiet on here (I assume everyone is struggling with the dry summer) so I thought I'd put something up. I wouldn't want it to be easy every time with fish crawling up the rod rings but once in a while would be nice, perhaps September will bring a change in fortune.

A good few days of steady rain would be nice, flush things out a bit. In the meantime, I've been concentrating on the sea...

Probably my last evening session for the season ( where did that go) a little bit of colour from the recent rain and the odd rising fish in the first pool had me change from my intended tactic of duo on to dry fly. It took a few changes of fly to get any response ( size 20 para Adams) but I couldn't hook the fast splashy rises, thinking these were probably small fish ( that's my excuse) I moved to the head of the pool and finally connected with this 7" wbt. At this point the wind picked up and made casting interesting for about 10 mins, then just as suddenly it stopped, the temperature dropped and that was it for any surface activity. Fished on till 8 o'clock ( practising my casting) until it became too dark to see the small fly under the trees, left with the feeling that I should have been there during the day!

Last chance salon for this season, I had the day booked off so decided on the Taw ( I think its my favourite CFFC stretch, it reminds me of fishing on the Teign as a nipper). Tried a bit of tight line nymphing but I don't really know what I'm doing and although a couple of fish were caught after lunch I went back to the dry fly. Some fish were taking tiny no seeums in the tail of the pools but spurned all my attempts with Griffiths gnats and CDC emergers even the reliable pink klink failed. In the end I put on my favourite Wickhams and fished the faster water, managed about ten wbt with the best at 9", nice to finish on the dry. The Taw looking lovely today One of the little 6" fish I caught today had another smaller fish hanging out of its mouth! Makes you wonder why it bothered with my little dry fly, perhaps as a after dinner mint "Its wafer thin" Last fish of the season from the top of the Taw beat Cheers all. Halfstoned.
