I visited the Abbey Gate Farm water this morning to clarify the situation re the fishing. I talked to Paul Burrough, who is running the fishing, and he gave me the latest. Fishing is still available for £5 which you put in the honesty box in the porch. It will go up to £10 in the near future. A short section of fishing at the top of the beat above the main road has been sold . This gives the new owner up there both banks. There is still lots of fishing with arguably the best pools on the farm stretch. This is an old map but as long as you take the correct turning off the Musbury/ Axminster road you should get there ok . The turning is on the bend near the Carpets Factory Shop. Be careful turning on to the main road when you leave. Happy fishing. Colin.

Many many thanks for the info. Mike from Otter fly fishers told me about it last year, but was not sure if it was still available. Cheers again

It’s a good sea trout water, or certainly was, as there were always some nice pools. It’s less productive as a bt water, in part as it does (or did) get fished a lot and it’s very low down in the catchment. I haven’t fished it for 7 or 8 years though, I believe the banks have been fenced to keep the cattle out the river, which would certainly have improved the situation. You also get some big grey mullet up through the beat.

It's never been a prolific brown trout water but it has always been a half decent sea trout and occasional salmon water. Last years run of sea trout was late but included fish up to eight pounds. Colin.

Any news from the Axe yet this season? I'm thinking of heading down to the farm on Sunday night. Not much cloud cover but the temp looks ok.

I would say it's worth a go. There is a chance of an early big fish. According to Paul Burrough the fish were later last year but who knows as every year is different. Colin.

Hi Colin,
Enjoyable but fruitless evening. The forecast said it was 11-12 dogs but it felt colder than that when we left at 1am. No sign of fish at all. The otter was busy though.
Some of the pools have drastically changed. I fear for the railway line in the next few years!

A friend fished it last night. Heard one ST jump all night in perfect conditions. Landed one brown trout, but not a sniff of a peal. The canal section is particularly weedy at the mo.

I spoke to the farmer at Abbey Farm last week. The fishing has been divided between the two brother’s farms as far as I could gather. The fishing below the Yarty confluence is now fishable on a ticket from the farm you pass just before Abbey Farm. Upstream of that is still managed as before.

Hi all
A bit of a long shot, particularly when considering most folk on here are less coarse than I, but I would love to try and track down a few dace and roach on the Axe and Yarty.
Does anyone know if there are remaining populations of either? And whether there are any stretches (perhaps the one already mentioned) where I would be allowed to float fish with maggot/bread?
Many thanks

Does anyone know if there are remaining populations of either? And whether there are any stretches (perhaps the one already mentioned) where I would be allowed to float fish with maggot/bread? Many thanks Kev Parr Probably a bit late with the answer here but here goes anyway. The last dace I saw in the Axe was at Axminster in the late 1990's or possibly very early 2000's. Occasional roach would drop out of Perry Street pond (up near chard) into a tiny brook but they never appeared in the main stem of the Axe. Someone stocked pike in the early 2000's and a few were caught and killed but they never bred or even survived more than a year. With the pike we may have simply caught them all or possibly any that we missed choked on mullet dorsal spines! I think the roach and dace were basically done for by the ever increasing silt load from maize growing, no chance of the eggs surviving to hatch. All pretty sad when you think of the size the roach used to achieve. The EA did plan to restock with roach but I'm not sure if it ever came to anything. Amazingly some anglers objected to the idea of stocking roach because they would attract more cormorants that would eat more fish... although the same people were happy stocking with sea trout (and salmon) because err umm, well they didn't really think that objection through did they!
