Here's a new one I did with Andrew Fowler who fishes the streams of South Africa. I don't know if I'll ever get to fish there but it was really interesting learning about the fishing in Natal. Just click here to listen

Thanks Pete... your advice to just watch the hand for a while to reduce rotation is going to be really useful, in fact I can do it at home with just the butt section.... my wife already thinks I am an obsessive loser in terms of fly fishing, so as long as I don’t take her eye out and put up with the sighs and strange looks all good Stunning morning up at Crow Point this morning (Braunton Burrows)... I had a meeting at 10 am so left home at 6am and was on the ‘beach by 8am for an hour casting before the meeting.... unfortunately it was low tide, by the time I had walked across some mud flats and sandbanks to get to the waters edge I was bl@@dy knackered.... if it had been on the S Devon Coast I’d have been closer to France Circle / double / jump and snake roll all going pretty well.... single was getting me a bit tetchy . I think the change in timing from grass to water is more noticeable.... the subtleties between- lifting and sweeping to the correct anchor point, sweeping with not quite enough speed or sweeping and blowing the anchor was causing some intermittent swearing Is there much difference between salt and fresh water? ...may have been just this morning and not quite feeling the timing, but it felt like it was taking more lift to sweep the line of the water than when I was practicing in fresh.... but overall, most casts seemed ok and felt immediately easier on water (not surprising).... I had the place to myself, the sun was rising over the headland on the opposite side of the channel... a killer start to a work day

I think you have to be an obsessive loser to be totally immersed in fly fishing!
Yes, you need to slow down on water. I think getting the movements right on grass is important but it can mess things up when you get back on water. I'd try not to do too much of that on grass other than working on anchor placement.
Not sure about saltw*ter vs fresh. Perhaps salt water is less sticky? Don't have any real idea though.

Thanks Pete... I think I’ll ease off the Spey on grass anyway now, the basics are there, I just need to get the speed/rhythm of the movements for water and get practicing anchor placement. I can focus on the annoyance of over rotation with my side cast on grass instead Just googled whether surface tension is increased in salt water (I thought the salt felt stickier).... it is But not by any significant amount So it appears I was just making excuses for p!ss poor technique

Yes, a really interesting story. I love the front room tackle shop that lasted many years!
Lots more recorded and a deep one coming that looks at flies, fly patterns and presentation in a detailed way.

Nice, I think I remember that one where he talks about working backwards when you choose tackle and start from the fly line, is that it? I just released a new podcast this morning where I talked with Peter Hayes and Don Stazicker. They have spent many, many hours observing feeding trout and have some very interesting views on trout behaviour, presentation and fly patterns that you might find interesting. Really interesting podcast Pete... I purchased the ebook, it contains some really detailed observations and thoughts... with the added bonus that the video links are really cool... I’ve tied a few pop up emerger and pop up midges to try out.. And then used the same wire at the tail idea for a Mayfly style emerger... tied a bit bulkier so not sure it will ‘pop’... maybe more of a ‘bob’ emerger

Nice, I've tied a couple of those and a few casualty duns too. It is pleasing to hear that perfect tying isn't needed for best results!

Here's a new one where I sit down with my pal Paul Richardson and talk about his design work within the fishing industry from rods to reels. It is a really fascinating insight into what goes into bringing a new product to the market. Click here to listen or it is available on iTunes or Spotify too.
