Plans.... nope, don’t want to get my hopes up... when I can go fishing I’ll take a week off to make up some lost time. I’ll probably split my time between the Otter, Frome and Piddle. Ottery fly club- otteryflyfishing.org.uk/index.htmI joined about 3 years ago, from memory I went on the waiting list and had to wait 12 months... not sure what the list looks like at the moment. When we are allowed back on the river I’d be happy to take you as guest... just ping me a message when things open up if you want to

Cheers for the reply. Fished the Deer park with a member (Mike) year before last. Had an interesting chat with Geoff Morris about joining but I was in the middle of sorting out my house renervation at the time. According to the Otter website, looks like I've missed the bus this season. All my plans for the last two seasons have gone to pot, what with the house search, the move and the renervation, so this imposition is more of the same. When we are finally allowed out I'll do three days straight fishing. I'll do Fernworthy first, get few under my belt then hit the rivers. I haven't fished the Dart, the Avon or the Axe (Abbey) yet,so I'll give them a try. I had a go on the Teign and the Taw last season, nothing spectacular, picked the wrong time to go I think. What with all this at least my fly tying is improving.

The cormorants have left a few . They have been working the river really hard . But , they have got to live and it’s our fault for fishing out the inshore waters. Let me know when and where you will be in the morning and I’ll be down with a cup of tea. Cheers , Colin.
By the way I’ve heard through the grapevine that the new man at Wessex fisheries is proposing a pegged system to implement social distancing on their waters. I would have thought a size 8 cats whisker flying through the air would be enough of a distancing solution.

Cormorants , just seen four flying back towards the sea here in Seaton , just finished dinner on the Axe. You do have a lot of them here in Devon. I've never seen any in Herefordshire or Gloucestershire . I didn't know they grew so big and they can swallow some quite sizeable fish. I'll be down at the Rugby club and start that end , time wise as soon as I've sorted the dog , checked my emails , make sure all my lot have got their act together and then finally the season will begin. If you go do there I'll find you . Leave some for me please. I'm aiming for 9.00am at the latest but nothing has gone to plan in the last couple of weeks for me. Are you the guy who leaves small piles of Himalayan balsam ?

Don the cormorant head dressing smear ones chest with otter spraint and with arms spread, recite the incantations.
Good luck one and all

Had a few hours fly fishing for mullet last night in Kingsbridge estuary, so relived to see they are back in numbers again this year after big drop last year. Conditions weren't great, had 3 takes and missed them all!

Arrived at Sidmouth fashionibly late , just as well, the east wind was cold. I wondered about seeing how the river had changed after the winter floods. Had a drink ,cigarette chatted to a few folk. Finally around midday it warmed slightly and a few fish started to show, some Mayfly were fluttering about, not many but enough for the fish to notice. I had 8 small fish in the end, Ginger quill and mayfly did the trick.
I got to Budleigh about 6.30pm. A lot has changed since last year, a lot. Nothing showing as the cold wind picked up but the Ginger quill continued to work, ended up with 7 small ones.

Well, I did the pilgrimage to Fernworthy with my mate Bill S. I got there fashionably late which seems to be the form for my fishing trips these days. Fly life was off the scale . Small black sedges, an upwing , and loads of alder , and I mean loads of alder everywhere. All along the margins in amongst the weed , tadpoles. The only thing missing was rising fish, this seemed to be the general consensus among all the fishermen present. I’ve never had to work so hard for the two fish I got that day, which made the ones missed sting all the more. I fished till 9pm, it didn’t feel right. I’m going to go for the next two weeks and if it’s like this trip , I’ll call it a day for Fernworthy. Strange!
