The Culm has always been essentially a coarse fishery, imo, particularly the further downstream you go. The CFFC stretches do seem to contain more Trout than the other bits I fish. They put in a new fish pass at Silverton a few years back,so maybe this is allowing more upstream movement of fish. Last time I fished Skinners, a few weeks ago, I even had a small Roach, which I've never caught there before, but there are plenty downstream at Cullompton.

Having fished our stretch of the Culm since we first leased the fishing I have not noticed much change in the fishing, there has always been a lot of Chub and Dace in there, some of the Chub are huge and I have caught Dace over 8". Their fry along with the minnows provide a nice snack for the Trout which is probably the reason the Trout tend to be larger on Culm. So far this season I have only caught 1 Chub and 1 Dace but I have caught 12 Trout. I wish Grayling would move over the new fish pass that would a new angle to the water!

Had a nice fish from the Taw this afternoon. It rose a couple of times in the third pool above the bridge so I threw the Mayfly pattern at it that I had on from Sunday at it engulfed it first cast. Gave a great account of itself on my 3 weight and I thought I might be in for a red letter day? Unfortunately that was about the only riser I saw for the whole session, caught a few small ones on nymph, picked up a few 7 to 9" fish by fishing in the faster water at the heads of the pools but I had to go down to size 20 klinks and emergers to get any interest. Funny really when the first fish took a huge Mayfly pattern. Walking back through the fields there were plenty of daddy long legs about so perhaps the size and profile meant the fish took it for that. About the only thing I didn't try today was a daddy, do any of you fish them on the Taw? Not the best picture I'm afraid, some water on the lens I think.

Well, bunked off work for what looks like the last session this season. Went to the lower stretch of the Culm this morning. Not much activity about but I did connect with 3 fish on a nymph, landing only one, but a nice 10 incher in prime condition. Plenty of trees down now on this stretch all the way up to road bride and weir.
Massive bull in the field with his entourage which made things a bit edgy. Despite walking the other side of the fence I did not feel that safe with only three flimsy strands of wire between us all (leccy seemed switched off too). However they all behaved reasonably well.
Maybe a chance of another trout on the Dartmoor Reservoirs if they are open into October as usual, otherwise, that's it for this year. May go and hunt down some bass in the meantime, so big ones showing now.

I also took the day off today and went to the upstream section of the Taw. Low, clear and sunny meant the fishing was obviously going to be challenging. A few fish were rising but they were hard to approach and I scared / put down most of them long before I could cast to them. I finished with 14 wbt in the end by fishing the more broken water at the head of the pools all on various small olive dry flies ( there were a few pale wateries hatching). Most were small but one nice 11 1/2" fish gave me a great scrap, this fish was sitting in just inches of water about a foot from the bank. I found another similar fish near the bank but couldn't get a cast to him before he legged it. Spot the fish There were some daddies in the fields and I did try one for half an hour but it only produced this little chap, not so much hooked as gaffed! Until next year
