Well Chris you have inspired me to make a start. It was the good old K.F. Odames vice that did it. Nice fly by the way.

Good for you Chris. I'll have to get going myself. I really don't need more flies, but have promised a mate of mine, who is making a return to fly fishing after a long absence, that I'll tie him some nymphs. My videos have inspired him apparently. As long as he stays out of my favourite spots it will be fine!

A nice fly.
Have you thought about its applications as an olive in a smaller size? There's a hint of Jingler about it that I really like!

It is exactly that Pete, a scaled up version of a jingler/soft hackle dry type thing. I use them for LDO's, BWO's etc.. I like the way they sit and the overall soft look. They are said to give a bit of movement with the high CDC wing? Not too sure about that one but they are successful for me.

Cool, yes, I like the soft hackle too. Do you stick with the shuck colour or go lighter?

A mixture of white,Amber and olive on no particular patterns ( Normally Amber on the deer hair sedge for some reason)? I wonder how much difference the Trout see against a cloudy or sunny sky or under trees etc..

The only reason is that it looks ārightā to me which of course, means absolutely nothing but if it gives me confidence in the patter Iāll take it!

Confidence is everything though isn't it, how else would we select one fly from a dozen other identical ones??? If someone asked you why "it just looks right" would probably be the best explanation.

I would love to say I have many identical flies, lined up in a row in my box but my tying has a Darwinian approach and flies mutate as a tying session goes on.
That having been said, I still haven't really got my tying mojo back and recently have been buying flies from tyers or in some cases, have been gifted some beauties too. Those definitely look smart in my fly box.

Like you Pete I've lost my fly tying mojo. Forced myself to audit the boxes today and ended up tying a bunch of tungsten nymphs. To be honest, with age and fading close-up eyesight I don't enjoy it any more and I'd just buy flies if I thought I could get exactly what I want. Iām not saying my own flies are better, but as you know it's a confidence thing and little is more important in fly fishing than feeling confident in your gear and just generally what you are doing.

Nice to know I'm not alone! I think the days of needing a lot of flies has gone since I stopped guiding and like you say, I am a believe in presentation and drag free drift over actual pattern outside of a small few instances.

I am a believe in presentation and drag free drift over actual pattern outside of a small few instances. For sure Pete. Like many river anglers I carry way more flies than I will ever use or need. When I look back on recent seasons I seldom use more than these in various sizes and or weights. The mass of other patterns are a kind of security blanket I just feel good about carrying but donāt use. That says more about my own insecurity than anything else. Weighted PTN Small black nondescript nymph Olive or black pogo nymph Occasional woolly bugger Parachute Adams Simple brownish dun Small grizzle spider Elk Hair Caddis To that I add a few huge leggy terrestrials and thatās about it. One important lesson I learned from my many trips to N.Z. where you can easily watch fish behaviour was ā locate the fish and just donāt spook them. Thatās far more important than fly pattern. In our often less than clear waters in the UK Iām convinced most of us are constantly spooking fish we donāt even know are there.

Yes, I'd be less likely to change pattern but more likely to change size if I'd worked out the hatch.
I get what you're saying about NZ although only having fished there once, being able to see the reaction of a fish does tell us a lot. I fished chalk streams more last year than I had in a couple of years but enjoyed spotting fish and watching how they behaved when I cast to them.
There is something pleasing about flies lined up in fly box though. I just wish my stayed tidy!
Anyone prefer to carry a large selection of flies or are you like wildfisher and carry a few in varying sizes?

I need to get back my focusā¦ for the first time I started the season last year without fully having sorted my fly boxes.. they were pretty messy and got worseš I havenāt even looked at my dry box yetā¦ need to order up some fresh cdc and get on with itā¦ I probably fish 3 main dry patterns, with perhaps another 4 - 6 regular standbysā¦. But obviously carry at least another dozen patterns!

It's madness, I carry hundreds of flies around each season, most of which never get wet, I've even got some MW green caterpillars that must have waded around with me for hundreds of hours just in case but I've not used one since the nineties? Strangely when I go on my little moorland river I take one box with a couple of dozens flies and feel quite confident. Not sure where the insecurity comes from on the other rivers but it's there.

Like wise Chris. Every year I think must cut down as I, along with most anglers I guess, only ever use a handful of what I carry. Not tying anywhere near the amount I used to as Iāve probably got enough to last me out. Still have to have that āspecialā though as you never knowš
