You were right Chris: I checked with the West Country Rivers Trust and there is no brown trout fishing permitted after dark. So I will just have to buy a sea trout licence if I want to go streamer fishing! They also are undertaking a number of improvements on the Dart system, but I don't think that includes a tagging programme. I was up on the Moor again today for a final hurrah, and it was very tough going in bright sun and strong E wind, but the streams look in superb nick with sparkling gravels and plenty of healthy weed growth.

I thought that might be the case Jonh, pretty sure the club rules on the Teign were for fishing to cease one hour after sunset. Can you believe that I have three days to myself and we get this hearwave☹️ tried the Yeo this morning at 8 o'clock just to see if I could beat the heat but it was pretty dead, only 3 small fish to hand. Not much point going out in these conditions and it look set for the week, ho hum.

I’ve got all this week off, fished early yesterday, but not today or probably tomorrow…. Thurs/Fri look better. Typical, I obviously wanted cloud this week, my wife had last week off and wanted sun for a week on the beach…. Neither of us very impressed😂

I bet you next week will be bloody perfect.

With the weather remaining ‘warm’ and river temps rising, WUF have closed some beats, I thought I’d head to Fernworthy for first light; arrived just over an hour before sunrise (you can fish an hour either side of sunrise / sunset), and I could hear fish feeding on the surface; as the light just started to increase I spotted a couple of rises from decent fish… but as soon as daylight arrived it went completely quiet… to make matters worse there wasn’t even a breath of wind, I gave it a few hours, seemed rude not to after getting up at 3 am… but with the surface like a mirror it seemed like my day could be more productive elsewhere… knocked it on the head at 10am, having not made a cast for at least an hour😏

Shame that you met with those conditions after making that VERY early start. I’ve found Fernworthy to be a bit temperamental at the back end and with this current spate of high temps. very difficult. It’s funny as I was thinking of going up there next as I’ve not fished it this year. It would be the first miss in over 45 years so probably will have to go. The forecast for next week is looking better so fingers crossed. Another strange season for sure.

Hi Chris, Yes, I remember that, it then changed to stocked browns of a decent size for a while. Personally I don't rate it, never have, imo you're much better off going to Wimbleball, which along with quality stocked Rainbows, has an excellent head of wild Brownies.

If I can remember Chris south west water tried various stocking ideas, including rainbows and at one point I think even char none of which seemed to work that well. I was and still am only really interested in browns. I agree with Yeoman Fernworthy for me has never been a great fishery but still is a special place, especially when there were boats available. My current favourite is Colliford lake but that to can be fickle and it’s a good drive for me these days. Must give Wimbleball a go again, it’s been years since I fished there.

Terry, get up there early June when the beetles are about, the dry fly sport in the margins can be fantastic.

Yes, I remember the boats all tied up outside the permit hut. My brother and I had a great day one season fishing sedge pupae patterns from a boat (straight out of Grodon Frasers book).

It wasn’t a wasted trip… stood on the banks of Fernworthy at 5 am, in a pair of shorts with the temp at 19C, waiting for daylight coffee in hand was a pretty special start to the day…. , and I’m generally an early bird and up before 6am🙂… although a fish would have been nice…

Always loved Fernworthy especially late evening with the Browns rising close in . Hoping to get back on the Cherrybrook/ Dart this week as it cools down a bit.
