Sorry, i know this is not a river, but please see if you can help me. thanks. This lovely reservoir just next to Okehampton is a free trout fishery, very rare beast! I fished it last week, and got caught in a tropical storm and blanked, although had 3 pulls. I realise its probably not stocked, but we often visit this area in our traffic calmer, and I would like to develop my relationship with it. I have fished Fernworthy, and caught, but as I dont like to take fish, would rather fish catch and release for free! Any advice from anyone who has had success there please? Paul

Hi Paul,
no worries, we'll keep it here, I'm not one for rules!
I've fished Meldon and walked it a few times. I found that lack of back cast space to be a small problem and it was a case of casting down the edge which isn't a bad tactic anyway as the water drops away pretty quickly. I guess you fished opposite the entrance as this is probably the best spot to get a reasonable cast in. I have also seen some really nice fish further down the bank just before the island (far side) when I was walking the dog there one time. Let us know if you get there soon as I keep meaning to fish it again. As ever black flies tend to work. I like fishing traditional wets but will also have a black tadpole at the ready just in case.
Another spot you might consider for brown trout fishing is Colliford and although not free I love the place and I also hear Roadford has been fishing well too....
Any one been to any of these recently?

Let's break the rules and leave it here!
I've a feeling there was something in one of the magazines about Meldon a month or two ago...can't remember which one though.

Perhaps we should have our meet up at Meldon and see what we can do as a group?

Hoping to get to Meldon in a couple of weeks time having been inspired here. Spending some time with some walking friends who don't know yet that they will be walking around Meldon! Should I get a clear date will advise. Looking forward to the trip if the weather stays good.
Will no doubt try and take in a river or two!
