Prolonged, heavy rain has rendered the Tamar virtually unfishable. The Lyd is looking a nice colour for a daytime sea trout... but perhaps not for long as more rain falls! This spate should bring plenty of salmon and sea trout up. Mr Jack Walton landed a fantastic 9lb 8oz salmon (with long-tailed sealice) yesterday, on an Ally's Shrimp. Jack was fishing with David Pilkington on the hotel's Lower Tamar Fishery rod. The first official Macnab (brown t, bass & peal in same day) was achieved at midnight on Tuesday night, by Adam Fox-Edwards. Having landed bass and trout during the daylight hours, Adam netted a spanking-fresh sea trout of 1lb 4oz on the River Lyd. Congratulations Adam! Fishing the same beat, David Pilkington caught and released a fish of 1lb 8oz (16in), as did Tim Smith with a fish of 3lb 10oz (21in). Ben Snee took a cracking fish last week at a shade under 4lb. School peal are also starting to show, heralding the real start of the 2008 sea trout season. The rivers are also fishing well for trout. All methods are producing fish, especially the dry fly and nymph. Sedges in particular are bringing fish to the surface. Some very good trout to 1lb have been landed on dry flies, and experienced anglers have reported catches of over 30 trout in an afternoon. Tony Bostock, staying at the hotel recently, landed and released 115 trout in just three evenings' fishing!
Cheers

Even though the Tamar and Lyd are still very high, the colour is starting to drop out and the fish are keen to take At the hotel, we've had five salmon (four on fly, one spinning - all clean(ish) and released) plus another lost since yesterday lunchtime on the middle Tamar and Lyd - with relatively light fishing pressure. Intermediate / med-sink lines and bright 2in tubes / bottles have been doing the business. Some pics can be seen here ;D: arundellarms.blogspot.com/2008/08/salmon-bonanza.htmlSea trout are also present in good numbers, with one angler landing six to 3lb-ish yesterday during the day. With a few dry days forecast, things should improve still, as all of these fish were caught in barely fishable conditions and the levels and colour are getting better all the time. Looking promising for the weekend! Tim

Rivers rose yet again yesterday, making all unfishable with fly. Fished the Lyd for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon, although chocolate-coloured and raging. Spinning was only just possible, but landed & returned a manic grilse of 3 1/2lb ish and lost a spanking fish of 7-8ish. Also had four peal (all returned). The Lyd is now high but a CRACKING colour A couple of guests have had a few daytime peal today, no more details as yet. Please please please make the rain stay away for just a few days Tim
