David Pilkington bravely fished a ROARING River Lyd today. The colour had subsided a little this morning, so he headed for the beats downstream of Lifton. Using a Di7 line ( ) and size 4 Beadhead Black Woolly Bugger, Pilks landed four peal; three of 14 to 16in (1lb to 1lb 4oz ish, all released) and one of 12oz (breakfast). If we have a dry night tonight, the Lyd will be spot on for a salmon tomorrow... ;D Cheers Tim

Um, no! It was a rather wet one (had over an inch here in Lifton)
Will be at least two dry days (WHEN?!) until even small tributaries will fish.
At 1pm today, the Tamar at Polson Bridge had about 2ft to go before it was out in the fields. The gauge on the Lyd is underwater!
Night peal fishing will not be possible for several days!

Biding time for the river to drop to proper night fishing height, here's a pic from the last venture out. It's not mist on the field, but steam as the warm evening met the wet fields. Funnily enough, it was a wet July day... Tim

Well, it's dropping... very slowly. High-water salmon fishing height is 0.3 on the gauge at Lifton, and the Lyd is currently on 0.4. The colour is now much more like it and we've got a couple of keen rods fishing sinkers and big tubes today and tomorrow... we shall see! As long as we get a dry day today and tomorrow, it should be good for the chance of a salmon or daytime sea trout. The Tamar is still very big although the colour is dropping out - it'll still need a few dry days yet! No night peal fishing for a while though Cheers Tim

Salmon fishing is well worth a go on the Lyd at the moment... David Morel landed a spanking fresh fish of 8lb 12oz on Saturday. The fish took a waddington. Fishing the adjacent beat, David's friend Hugo lost a fish of 10 to 12lb at the net. I fished for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon and rose two fish on the Lyd, but didn't hook them. I decided to try another beat on my way home and, after a hell of a scrap, landed a fish of around 9lb which was released. The fish took a bottle tube. There is still plenty of water in the Lyd and it's clearing all the time. It's great to see a number of fresh fish around! ; Cheers Tim

Trouting on the Angling 2000 beat of the Lyd today. Water has come down a fair bit now and was a nice level for trout. We didn't see a lot of rising fish and fished a NZ dropper with most fish coming to GRHE 2 feet off of the dry. A few sedge about but not a lot else.
Highlight was seeing Tim waving out from his window and then popping down with a couple of drinks for us. Way beyond the call of duty but hugely appreciated!

Had a guest decide not to fish last night, so I popped out for a couple of hours instead... nice to be out after the hot and hectic game fair! Landed two schoolies and missed another in the first few casts (one on a Pilk's Bumble, the other on a Mallard & Silver). Then missed several more good takes so switched to a Mouse. Missed a take and then lost what was a good fish. Switched once again to a fast glass intermediate and 1 1/4in tube - landed a fish of 1lb 12oz, followed by two more spanking silver schoolies It was getting on for 12.15am and I was pretty much soaked to the skin (was a very stormy one!) so called it a night. If it had been a little drier and I wasn't working I reckon the river would have fished all night long... Twas a GREAT evening - at last! The Lyd above the Thrushel junction is one of few stretches of river here that's not chocolate this morning. There are some peal in serious trouble tonight (though sadly not by me!) Tim
