My name is Carl and I come from sunny Westbury, Wiltshire. I only ever seem to get a chance to fish the clear rivers of my mind - TOO much work is getting in the way of fishing.
Pete - We will be down again over the weekend of the 17th June (my birthday), have asked the man upstairs for a good flush of rain between now and then!
Regards
Carl

Hi Carl,
Good to have you here!
The river has come up a massive 2 1/2 inches over night which is the most I have seen this trout season so far....would love some more...

Hello...I'm new to the board. Have been Fly Fishing for about 5 years....but have been fishing by other methods for most of my life.
So why is a guy from Canada joining a Devon Forum? I was born in Canada, but lived in South Devon for 6 years in the 70's, and do return occasionally to visit family, but have not been back since I began FF'ing...so hopefully, I plan to do a bit the next time I'm there. I regret not having discovered fly fishing while living there, and having had another reason to visit the moors and local rivers, besides for Sunday drives with the family!
I used to live in Modbury and went to school in Kingsbridge and Ivybridge. My parents moved to Looe, Cornwall in the 80's, and I have brothers living in Dartmouth.
From what I've read on this site and other Devon/Cornwall sites, fly fishing is alive and well in the SW, and I hope to gain enough insight to make any future trips there worthwhile in terms of fishing.
I usually river wade for Resident Trout (Brook/Brown) in the south west Ontario, within an hour or two of Toronto. There's some excellent fishing opportunities in this area...except it's a bit hot lately, so I'll give the trout a break and maybe target Bass/Pike until things cool down.
btw...the British Open was fun to watch this weekend...good for Clarke!
Regards, Ray.

Welcome Ray, Canada is on my list of future fly fishing expeditions. And yes, fly fishing is alive and well in the westcountry. Cheers Richard

Hello all,
I am returning to fly fishing after being away from it for decades. Managed out for an afternoon back home in Scotland during late July and trying to sort out fishing more often now that I am back in Somerset.
I've joined this forum as the rivers in Devon (and Cornwall) look as if they suit my ideal of fishing, which is mainly wild trout.

Hi all. I am afraid I hadn't realised we had a forum for the SW!! Better late than never eh? Guided for the Rising Sun, Umberleigh in the early 2000s and looked after the Fox water in the 90s. Fished all over in the past, but had two very lean years due to new family and busy job. Enjoy writing about fishing. Chin chin Mark mark-izzard.blogspot.comwww.fishingthewest.co.uk

Welcome. Combe Martin is near the East Lyn, a great salmon river if you can wield a worming or spinning rod with any degree of competence, but also a great river for catching wild brown trout on the fly. You will also be near Wistlandpound Reservoir, one of The South West Lake Trust offerings. The river Taw is also within easy striking distance and is great for both salmon/seatrout and brownies. At the risk of being self promoting, may I steer you toward my fishing the west website, the address of which is below. It is a general resource for visiting anglers. If you tell us when you are coming down, we will be able to suggest the flies that might be needed. Cheers Mark

Hello ,i just came across this site while trawling the net looking for info on fishing in Devon.I have been plugging and spinning for bass for a few years but i have just bought some fly fishing gear and i am looking to try this on rivers and maybe the sea.Mostly fished around the Buddleigh Salterton area with varying success and have often wondered what the river otter fishes like. Also interested in the Exe around Tiverton as i have relatives there who i visit, think the riverwalk is just rod licence .Any info on fishing appreciated.
