I am from New Zealand but manage each year to fish a few rivers in UK. Our trips to UK are business orientated but this year we will be in the Dorchester/Exeter area for a week or so. I also fished there 4 or five years ago, it was memorable as I managed to catch a very large grayling on the Frome. I didnt realise just how large until Richard Slocock pointed out that it was trophy sized. I have enjoyed reading your forum, I guess that I am referred to as a Guest" when browsing the board. Tiggs

Angler and reelmaker in Seattle with family in Devon

Hello all -I'm brand new to the board, an angler and reelmaker here in the states and I'll be coming over for a family visit to Bovey-Tracey area in early April. While there I would really love to do a little fishing on Dartmoor and test my latest 3-5wt reel design on a couple of those classic wild brown trout rivers if I could. Based on what research I've been able to do, I'll have all the right kit with me, and know to purchase a rod fishing licence for the trip, but I'm a little confused about beats, tickets, passports, etc., and how all that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Christopher blackburnreels.comon Instagram: blackburn.reels

Welcome cablackrun, There is more info here but I think judging by your comments that you may have looked at the Westcountry Rivers Trust site already. Basically, I wouldn't worry about buying vouchers and just head to one of the shops and buy a permit to fish. I usually go to the shop at Postbridge and buy my lunch from there too. It is also right on the East Dart should you want to head there. You can also buy a permit from other places including Two Bridges Hotel. This is right on the West Dart and so you can buy your permit and head to the river. These might be good places to start from. I've included a link that I think has a map of Dartmoor and if you look for Two Bridges and Bellever it will give you an idea of where to start. westcountryangling.com/dartmoor-beats/?v=79cba1185463Hope that helps a little but fire some questions if you need more help, there are plenty here who can help you. Pete

Thank you Pete -the East and West Dart are the two I've been considering the most, so that is great news. This is going to be a fun trip -maybe I'll see some of you guys out there!

They are good places to start but drop a post here nearer the time for more info etc. I was going to mention that it can be cold up there that time of year but saw that you are from Seattle so guess you have that covered!

I will drop a post around that time thank you Pete, and yes I'm OK with fishing in adverse conditions -my happiest fishing memories are all in nasty weather, fish or no fish!
Thanks again

My second season having started off at Little Wareham , and Torridge Fishery, I’m looking forward to getting to know my local river the Taw having lived in North Devon for 23 years. Salmon fishing has become my No 1 passion. Amongst my wildest exploits I’ve fished Bronze Shark in South Africa, and Blue Shark off Looe in Cornwall 2 years ago. I’m also a big fan of trying to get blue fin recreational fishing established here in the Southwest having been an avid follower of the great work Thunnus UK are doing in the research of these beautiful creatures being sighted off our West coast and Irish channel. That said I’m keen to learn as much local knowledge as possible to make my chances of getting my 1st silver bar even better.

Good to have you on board Tony. It sounds like you have a really mixed background of fishing that I am sure we'll be interested to hear about. If you have any questions about the rivers you're fishing just fire them, there are plenty here who can help.

Hi my name is Derek and I'm just about to start house-hunting in Devon. I've been living in SW France for the past few years where good fly fishing is at a premium. Catch and kill is 'the norm' down here so fishing is very hard. Haven't decided where in Devon we want to be, but I'll be 71 in a few weeks and although I'm still pretty active, the knees are a bit of a problem at times. I would welcome any advice on areas with easily accessible fishing, i.e. without too much clambering down high banks and with fairly easy wading. If there is any reservoir boat fishing available in those areas so much the better! Looking forward to meeting some of you on the banks.

Welcome to the board Derek. As a fellow 71 year old you could not pick a nicer place to live. I fish on Dartmoor mainly but it is not the most knee friendly place to be honest. There are many board members here who can no doubt recommend more friendly rivers and clubs etc. With regard to boat fishing on reservoirs have a look at South West Lakes web site. Happy house hunting. Terry
