The Otter is fishing really well at the moment with a good evening rise.An upstream ginked up mallard + claret has worked particularly well just before and into dark.Finished off last evening with a near 2lb fish. Colin.

First sea trout of the year on a devon dumpling,a dry fly invented by my father many years ago ."Particularly good in water fining down" Worked well last night for the browns as well. Colin.

Went tonight and fished in the rain,it wasn't raining when I started, and had over a dozen on the devon dumpling including some over the pound. When the wind started I decided it was enough and retired to the pub for an otter ,bitter that is . Colin.

Had a nice sea trout last night .Fed up with not fishing I fished with a rapala in the coloured water and caught one about 6lb.Rather use the fly but I was desperate to do some fishing. Colin.

More sea trout showing now.Have had a few in the last week upto 4.5lb.Some on sunk fly and a first this season on a surface lure last night.New type of surface lure tied on a tube with a treble in the end instead of on a single tied with a stinger treble. Lost a big fish on a goats toe and when I checked the hook there was a tooth from the fish neatly placed on the point up to the barb.I must rename this fly the "goats tooth". Colin.

Took the new pup for a walk along the Otter and disturbed 2 fish in the shallows, very encouraging.Plenty of flood damage but it will make for interesting fishing this season. Some pools will change for the better and some for the worst. Colin.

Does anyone know what club if there is one that has the rights for the stretch of the Otter after the Deer Park Hotel and Ottery St Mary?
Was keen to give it ago if I could track down the club/ Land owner.
Cheers,
James

The Ottery Fly Fishing Club has about 6to 8 miles of fishing in various stretches between Tipton St John and Tracey Bridge at Honiton. There is a limited membership of about 40 members. Some years you can get in straight away other times you can wait a couple of years. For this year we had 8 applications for 6 places (resignations). You can contact Pat Coleman for more info' at I, Hazel Close ,Newton Poppleford, Devon. There aren't any day tickets directly available to the public, but as members, we are allowed to buy a number of "friends" tickets. Colin.

The Otter has switched on at last.Plenty of fish rising into the "dimpsy" period. And a couple of heavier type splashes. After two good nights the weather has changed and it looks like my next session will be delayed. A Salmon trip to the Wye on Thursday also looks doubtful. Time to tie some more flies. Colin.

Flies are working well. There are plenty of fish about despite the colder nights. The Devon Dumpling worked very well in the slightly tinted water after the water dropped enough to fish. When walking the dog below Otterton I saw plenty of fish moving on the free stretch. Colin.

Saw my first otter of the year last night.Prior to that I saw a squirrel swim across the river.Last year I saw a stoat swim across the Spey. Earlier in the evening I saw a large dog fox being dive bombed by a magpie until it left the "area". It's amazing what you see if you sit quietly and watch. Colin.

Saw another Beaver last night. This time below Tipton.Caught a nice few browns which are now taking b w o's.Fished the Combe House water last week and was disappointed not to see more fish. Aregular fisher there said that he had seen a pair of Beavers there. I think more than the one reported female has got out. Colin.

Hi Colin,
Interesting about the beavers, someone mentioned to me a short time ago that they saw something on the Taw that had a large tail and wasn't an Otter.
I saw my first few BWO's this week too.

Phew that is good I thought I was seeing things, when out walking my dog along the river in early July just below Tipton on your section of River Colin, I thought it was a Beaver but than thought I was seeing things.
