I was on the river yesterday and saw my first Hawthorn fly of the year. It reminded me of hitting Roadford at the peak of the hawthorn 4 or 5 years ago.
We had fished Colliford the day before and it didn't really happen but the next day we got the wind on our backs and had a great time.
Anyone else ever had a memorable hawthorn session?

My father + I fished Kennick many years ago when it was a brown trout fishery and the membership was limited to 50.If we fished in the middle of the week we often had the lake to ourselves. We could start at the top and work down either side using a north-east breeze to fish across and down as you would wet fly on a stream.Any black fly fished well in April/May because of the hawthorn hatches. We tended to use a Bloody William on the point with a Rusty Blue on the dropper. If a hatch of sedges occurred we would put a Nice's Favourite on the dropper. You will find these flies in Courney Williams book,A Dictionary of Trout Flies.Believe me they still work today.I wil be using them tomorrow at Kennick if the conditions are right. Colin.
