I had a spuddle round on the day ticket stretch of the Axe at Axminster today. A few grannom hatching off and I saw my first swallows of the year The fishing wasn't red hot but I picked up a few here and there, all on dry. Best one 12 inches which is about all you can expect from the Axe when it comes to brown trout. A few sea trout smolts dropping downstream too, hope to see some of them on their way back up later in the year A fly that looks not much like the grannom sedge but that works anyway! One for the geography students, newly formed ox bow. A smolt. Andy

Hey Andy I've only recently registered and just started fly fishing after a 20 yr gap from coarse fishing. Where is the Axe fishing you refer to- is it Cowhayne farm or another stretch? The Axe is on my doorstep, so could be a handy place to call in... cheers Matt

Hi Matt, welcome aboard This is the day ticket stretch at Abbey Farm just outside Axminster. There is a good length of water here and it can be good for sea trout as well as brown trout. It also gets a huge run of mullet most years. If you need directions I'll PM them. I've fished around Cowhayne on the Coly in the past but I find it is just too busy with walkers/dogs/kids/courting couples to fish during daylight. Fishing it at night for sea trout could be good and you don't get all the daytime distractions, although you do still get courting couples in the dark! Andy

Excellent, I'd seen the Abbey stretch referred to on a site but it was 5 yrs old so wasn't sure if it was still available. Is it useful to wade stretches or is it best fished from the bank- I'll pop up and have a look soon. Thanks for the info Matt

I always fish these open areas of the Axe in wellington boots, I'm just too lazy to faff about with waders. The top end of this water does have some high banks and wading would be the sensible option on that section.

Hi Andy,
I've seen the bats out as well recently when it was warmer after the Grannom.
Would be much oblidged if you could send me details of the Day Tickets on the Axe stretch as I've never fished the Axe and would like to give it a go with my brother one day.
Sandy.

Still plenty of smolts around just above the tide yesterday evening. Pretty high tide too, but I failed in the quest for a sea trout. My fishing was disrupted by an errant bullock which fell in just upstream and headed for the sea, past me and through the pool. Makes a change from swans and otters, I guess.
