Up until yesterday i had only hooked one mallard whilst fishing, and that was over 30 years ago when it took my bread flake i was using to catch a carp. Then yesterday up at Kennick we hooked 2. The first saw the fly line panicked and got tangled in the nylon, the second saw the fly line, and swam along side, i could see what was going to happen but my client didn't lift the dry fly quick enough, all i can say is i tie a realistic sedge pattern! Thankfully both were returned unharmed to the water. I am worried an Otter might be next, they are on the Teign almost every night at the moment, i can just see them grabbing a sea trout that is being played out. Anyone else caught something by accident? Cheers Richard

Had an otter on the Otter last season. In the dark I noticed a bow wave coming upstream.I tried to get my fly out of the water but hooked the otter. It went upstream at a rate of knots and I lowered the rod so that it would break off.The otter went away with the fly but there was little else I could do. I have hooked numerous bats over the years but the most unusual thing I have hooked was a childrens toy .It was quite a shock in the dark to swing in and grab a"creature" that was half dinosaur, half monster.I admit to a sudden cold chill up the back until I put the torchlight on it.
