Netted the weir again today. Not so good in the lower water but worthwhile for the 14 fish we placed above the weir to continue the spanning run. We hope to try again this side of Christmas ,if we get some rain. Colin.

Good work Colin. Surely all this evidence you have from your netting will support a strong case for funding / building a fish pass? Have you all got one in to the EA? Cheers, Kev

We are starting to put a case together using photo's showing the operation. This will go in some of the local press. There is a fund called the "Keith Owen Fund" that has certain monies for enhancement projects. I believe that there is a European law that says that there has to be passage for fish migration so there could be money there. It will take time but hopefully there will be action taken. Colin.

Hi Colin,
I know it isn't scientific in any way but wondered if you were getting a feel for numbers of fish running the river compared to previous years when you are netting?

I would say that the numbers are steadily increasing which could be a result of our efforts ,or maybe just one of those things. As you say Peter you can't be too scientific . Colin.

I was involved/ managed a project last year looking at the Sid last year, funded by the Keith Owen Fund. In-stream surveys, adjoining land management mapping, electro fishing and a quick assessment of the options for the weir. We covered the main stem and tribs, really interesting and a great little river... There's some nice habitat and lovely stretches along it's length, plus some nice Browns, stone loach, eel and some lampreys. The weir was interesting but it would be expensive... Over £100k to fit a fish pass, obviously works to improve passage for eels would be far more manageable and the case of a few thousand. It would make a nice couple of days fishing working your way upstream.

The weir was netted yesterday for 5 nice fish on the first attempt with a zero on the second and final attempt. I couldn't make it but was told that the mainly Brown Trout were around the 2lb mark. We will probably have another go soon as there hasn't been any evidence of spawning activity below the weir . Colin

Hi Colin, I find these posts really interesting especially hearing about the size of the fish! Are you finding these sizes of fish regularly or being so far down do you think they might they be slobs? I did a bit of searching and found the site below that I thought might be of interest to members wanting to learn a little about the work being done down on the Sid. www.sidvaleassociation.org.uk/index.php?page=river-patrol

Total netted for the season - 102 . Mixture of browns ,sea trout and anything in between. Yesterday there were over a dozen fish lying below the bridge waiting to get involved in spawning. Some hens were cutting reds and some cock fish waiting in station. This was lunchtime when I looked again after midnight I could see some bigger fish there .this was in the light of the street lights. This morning ,eager as hell I dashed down there to see the start with no fish visible in the rapidly rising river. I hope all their good work will not be undone. It was quite a sight yesterday to see the spawning drama unfold. I will keep my eye on things to see if they try again. Colin.

Because the Sid is a relatively short river it rises and falls quickly. As a result the river was clear enough to see fish this morning. If it doesn't rain it should be perfect for watching tomorrow. It would be good to get some photos of the spawning activity as this could help in getting a fish pass built. With the amount of water surging down river in the winter months I cant see the redds and their contents surviving, but who really knows. Colin.

They netted the Sid this morning and were able to put back upstream of the weir a cock and a hen salmon as well as nine sea trout and a good number of Browns . Colin.

We had another go at netting the weir yesterday . Good result catching 15 Browns ,5 good size sea trout up to 4lb and a number of small eels . We haven't caught eels before so it looks like they may be recovering. Colin.

Hi Colin We had a couple of eels when surveying at the head of the river... One of the tribs feeding in from memory. We also provided some costings for fitting eel passage "mats' (sorry can't remember the technical name... Long day), I'll see if I can dig out an electronic copy of the report for you. Cheers Matt

We netted again this morning in clear cold water. Seven Browns on the first and three on the third attempts made it a worthwhile exercise. It really needs a midweek spate to get the bigger fish to run up to the weir. I am endeavouring to get some pictures from our numerous observers to post here. Cheers, Colin.

It is really good to hear of the work you are doing, if you need any help give me a ring. The Sid is a lovely river I admire it every time I walk the dog through the byes, must take a rod one day.

Netted this morning and we were able to put 10 Browns over. Not bad considering we haven't had very much water lately. The spawning below the bridge has finished for the time being. There are a couple of trout near the redds but the sea trout have disappeared. Colin.

Two were over the pound and in great condition. The rest ranged from 5or 6 ounces up to the pound+. I would like to post some pictures or video but I get a fair way along the process and get the message file too big to download. I am working from pictures on my iPad . What do I have to do ? Colin.

I haven't uploaded video, for photos- I first upload them into photobucket (I have that as an app on my iPad) Once the photos are in photobucket if you click on them individually you get a line of options at the bottom of the screen, one of which is a little circle with an 'I' in it, click on that info tab and it takes you to the info screen, where there are 4 lines of options- click on the IMG line and it will say link copied, you then just paste the link link into your forum post and it will load up the photo. Sounds more long winded than it is, once you have installed photobucket it's only a case of loading up the photo's and then two stages to load onto the forum.
