Managed a quick session here today on the passport beat. Fished from Gladhayes bridge up to next one. 8pm to 9.30 pm. Lotscof fly life, more types than I knew existed. Thought some were mayflies. Being a bit clueless about such things I chucked on a small black klinkhammer. Fish on the first cast! Nice 5" wbt. Another 5 minutes later. Fishvofcthe day came in from the back of a tight corner pool, stuffed himself into some roots. It was only 2 yards to the opposite bank though and shin deep so with some careful root snapping I eventually beached a lovely 8" wbt, my best yet since moving to rivers this year. Another 5" wbt came later and lost what I guess was another 8" at dusk.
A lovely short session. More wbt in 1.5 hours than in 6 on Dartmoor and that smallest would have been my biggest there too!
I will be back!

If you enjoyed that, try the Crediton FFC waters further upstream- had a lovely and successful morning there today- a mile or two of wbt. Most seasons yielding a 13" and bigger, best 25".

Didn't realise they had water up there. On their website they say they have some at the back of Willand. This whole stretch from Uffculme up looks so good, I need to have a go. Any ideas about the rest of it?
Was wondering about joining cffc but I don't have that money or time. I live in Exeter so it would be ideal though.

Sorry you don't have the time, but cffc membership is equivalent to 9 goes on Champerhaies in a year- less if you help bank clearing in the winter. If you are in xeter, the Dulverton CLub at £30 a year for three stretches on the Exe, Barle and Haddeo is worth a thought- troule is you have to book in advance- althogh I've never had a problem getting a beat.

First trip here this year today at dawn. Only 6 degrees celsuis and some frosty dew. Is it that time of year again? Three wbt to 9" early on on a nymph and one 2" minnow! Not much action in the middle section but had 3 wbt again from the same pool higher up on a dry. Nice trip out, needs a bit of trimming here and there but its late season and overgrown everywhere.

The Upper Culm beat (West Country Angling Passport) was in fine fettle yesterday. Despite a persistent Easterly breeze, a trickle of olives had fish looking up. Well worth the 230 mile round trip from Surrey!

Had a quick evening session here last night, my first evening outing of the season. Only one tiddler caught, a few more missed. Could do do with a bit less water. Some bank clearing wouldn't go amiss either. It's disappointing to see so many pools unfishable due to last year's fallen trees and some easily pruned branches. Always a pleasant visit though.

Returned here on Saturday last for the first time in years. Much has become overgrown and some spots aren't accessible anymore but being a long stretch there is still enough to keep you occupied for a reasonable price and time.
Connected with 2 fish on a hawthorn dry but a gold head ptn got the job done in the end, only a 3" fish bit saved the blank for my first outing this year
Funny old spring we are having.

Yes Rubble definitely a strange spring, everything seems to be on hold. Have you tried the CFFC stretch of the Culm yet this season?

That's fair enough Rubble, I'll look forward to any passport beats reports, there's a few around the okehampton/Launceston area I keep meaning to try but never get around to.

At last, a forum again. I'm glad people are dribbling back ( and no huge fish to make me jealous!I'm hoping to get out for the first time during next week.

Hi Paul, no fish to brag about yet. I had a short foray on the CFFC Culm water upstream of Skinner's Farm about 10 days ago. Not v warm, v blustery. Some fly-life but no fish movement on the surface, no takers to nymph or dry. I was intending to mark Coronation afternoon today with another go (I'm sure HRH would approve) but the river has come up a bit and coloured with the rain in the last 24 hrs. If it stays warm tomorrow and has dropped and cleared I will be off again to do battle with the nettles. A word of caution: the big open field at the top end has some bullocks in it so the single-strand electric fence is plugged in - to the mains I think! I have had a bit of a jolt from it in previous seasons so negotiate it with care! Tight lines to all.
