Hi Mark,
I know a fair bit about Scott repairs although I believe the US section turns rods around v quickly now and distribution in Europe is now looked after by Flyfish Europe who I have got to know a bit and seem really good guys. They are hard core fishermen that I do know.
I was lucky enough to fish in NZ and had a couple of days when I couldn't land fish. They just wouldn't stick. I was fishing a pool with 3 rising fish and picked off two smaller ones that came adrift and planned how I would play the big one at the head of the pool. I cast, hooked him and kept him out of the snag that the last two beat me up in and he decided to go upstream and snag me elsewhere. Next day I saw a rising fish and had been fishing a nymph and thought to myself that I was going to lose it. I then stuck a dry on, covered it and hooked it. It was a good fish and I had to run through some pretty deep pools before I landed it and was amazed it stuck. I didn't look back from there. Funny old game.
I mentioned the hooks as I have noticed lost fish have been far fewer since changing hooks but I am sure it is some of that in the head stuff!

Lucky indeed to fish New Zealand !. Interesting story thanks for sharing. The Scott is a fantastic rod and it would be a wrench to sell it but it would probably come down to a financial choice in the end( like most things). Your probably on a river as I post this, good luck.

Hi Mark,
The fish I was telling you about should have come off! Luckily I was wet wading and was almost neck deep at one stage. My buddy was fishing downstream and I had to go through the pool and he netted it for me. 5lb of prime NZ brown!
Tues was great. I fished nymphs in the morn and was shamed into fishing a dry by my friend so I didn't get to see the Hanak as he was fishing a Scott ( funnily enough) G2 but he has tried the Hanak with fly line and didn't think it worked for him. I fished the One as a nymph rod and then with a Barrio fly line and it was superb. I did bump one fish on the dry but that was about it.

Where are you doing your grayling fishing Pete? How do you rate the barrio lines in comparison to cortlands ? Colin.

Hi Colin,
It was on the Wylye on a club water , was a really nice day.
I really like the Barrio lines and have had them for a while now. V little memory and they lay straight. Also great service from Mike who is a real gent. I visited his fishery a few years back and it is a really nice place run for the fishermen more than anything else.
I also do like Cortland lines and have been a big fan of the Loop Evotec 85 line too. I bought a 4wt Loop to go with the Sage expecting it to be the right combo and thought it was good but strung up the Barrio and it was superb.
Whenever I buy a rod I'll cast a few lines on it to see what is best for me and the difference can be quite noticeable. I have tried to do this with the ezine too so that when I review a rod I can hopefully give people a feel of what is the most effective line. It is of course subjective though.
Rio are doing some interesting things with tapers and the new Barrio SLX is interesting too. That having been said I know plenty of people who are happy with a mill end line. That's the great thing, everyone is different!

You are so right regarding what line suits some rods and/or some people. This is probably more so with salmon tackle. Thanks again for the info'. Colin.

Hi Pete, That Brownie sounded like it was hard won, well done.
Well done on getting out. My usual Grayling river is over the banks and has been like that for most of this bloody season. I'm going to have to take the plunge and spend some dosh at Wherwell which I've heard its fishing well.

Hi Colin,
You're dead right about salmon lines there are some really good lines out there that allow you to get your flies to the fish in a wide variety of water conditions and fishing situations.
Mark,
My grayling river is shot too although the Wylye was unfishable the next day. I have guided on Wherwell a few years back but never fished it. I always hear good things about the grayling fishing there though. I know Jim has had some clonkers out. I'm hoping to pop myWelsh Dee grayling cherry before the year is out.....so many rivers....

In an otherwise disastrous weather week on the Welsh Wye at Rhayader, 10 mile or so upstream of Colin's venue, I had two 14 1/2 inch grayling (or perhaps the same fish twice in three hours!!) in mid September.
Lovely spot- over 4 miles of water reserved entirely for the residents of four self catering cottages )only two of which have ever been in use at the same time when I have been there). The home pool, out of bounds to fishing, has about ten massive (10-15lb) trout, a mixture of browns and escapee rainbows, fed as pets by the lady of the house!

Is this the stretch owned/run by Richard Gipps and family?

Don't think so. some of the water- the Glaslyn estate- is owned by Paul Harrison and he rents water above and below which he keeps exclusively for residents. Even had a salmon there in July!
The water lies south of Rhayader, from just above the Junction pool where the Wye is joined by the Elan and runs south of there for a couple of miles.
There is an advantage that, if the Wye is in spate, you can normally fish the Elan which is reservoir controlled.

Pete, I broke my Dee cherry this year during summer while on a family holiday. It's a fantastic river with beautiful scenery etc. I fished the Maelor stretch in not so good conditions with it being boiling hot and bright sunshine ( I must have picked the only day like this during the season ). Even so it fished it socks off with a couple of clonker Grayling taken on dries , they must have been nudging 2 lb. It had a really good rise last thing to add to a great day . I can imagine the fishing this time of year would be great.
Paul, I have fished the Ryhader stretch before when the lower river has been in flood but have never done any good for some reason . It might have to do with the conditions though as I haven't fished it without the river being really high. Some of the wading up there is quite ' interesting ' especially when the water is coloured up . I should try it when it's in better nick. It's a really nice stretch though which I'm sure would fish well . There are so many nice rivers in that area it would take you a lifetime to fish them .

Had a good trip to the Wye I had a dozen grayling to about 1.5lb and a few trout. Most of the grayling were caught on the maggot though. Stunning scenery with lots of salmon showing.Definitely a venue for a future salmon trip. Also had a couple of trips to Wherwell on the Test.I was pleasantly suprised to find not too many people and plenty of fish.Last Thursday I had most of my fish on the dry fly.A small c de c olive emerger I tied up the night before did well as did the reliable f-fly. Hope to go again before the end of the year if the weather and the pocket are up to it. Colin.

Hi Colin, Glad you had a good trip to Wales. I was down at Wherwell a couple of Saturdays ago and had a good day. I had planned to go mid week but there I rang up to find nine people already booked in on the Thursday. I went on one of Hugh's days which was surprisingly quiet. In fact half the people on it had booked with our group .
