Post by Pete Tyjas on May 7, 2013 7:16:54 GMT
I wonder if there is anyone out there who has technical skills with forums?
I would really like to try and make the forum look a bit smater and see if I can get rid of the ads too.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Pete

Hi pete,
I am far from a technical expert. I was- a long while ago- used to calling in someone if my computer didn't behave as instructed. But in terms of ad free, there appears to be a button at the bottom which says "click here to make this board ad free'. I haven't tried it as I fear being struck off, but it might work....

Hi Starsky,
Is this "smater" thing another of your LOLs or insider West Ham jargon or just a failure to use spellcheck?

Hi Paul,
Yes I think I can pay to have it ad free and if it isn't too expesive will go for it. It was more a case of trying to make the forum a bit smarter design wise which I have no clue how to do.
Yes Paul, Smater is a East End term but not stricktly rhyming slang. It is short for "doesn't matter" (or not)

Post by paul on May 8, 2013 22:29:11 GMT
Hi Pete,
I'd just seen the button- didn't know it would cost!
I seem to be able to ignore the adverts- if I read a newspaper, I rarely notice them so if I want, for example to look at holiday offers I have to re-read the paper reading adverts only!
so I'm happy as is.

Not sure about all this West Ham stuff...
Anyway, I know a bit of HTML/XML and apparently Proboards are highly customisable, though the more complex the board the longer it takes to load...
I'll have a look at the source code and see if I can figure anything out. Did you have any specific in mind?

Having done a little digging it looks as though you can make a few tweaks to the forum skin fairly easily through the admin panel if you want a different look and feel - there's a decent, but long, guide here . Happy to sit down have a look with you at some point if that would be helpful.

Hi JimmyB,
You'd be most welcome to join the Westcountry West Ham Supporters Club, there's more here than you might think!
Thanks so much for having a look. If I gave you permisions would that help?
I was thinking of having a nice pic as a skin or header and wondered if it were possible to change some of the settings a bit.

Ah, I knew there was something odd about folk down here, now it all becomes clear.
Much like you, I was a season ticket holder before I left London for Devon. Only my seat was about 10 miles north west of yours, across Hackney Marshes.
Permissions would definitely help, also if you've got a pic in mind I ought to be able to do something with it if you email it across. From what I understand it should be possible to make any changes you have in mind, if they're not too outrageous.

To be honest, I don't mind West Ham (does that make it better or worse?). And I've got good mates who are Arsenal STs.
It's Chelsea I can't stand.

Right then chaps. First of all, apologies to everyone who's had to put up with me cocking about with the forum appearance. I think we've made some progress. The one thing that does need to be decided is the background, I reckon there are three main candidates. The first is this one which I'm calling 'Spawning Gravel' it does tile a little bit, but not too badly. The second tiles in a more pronounced fashion - by which I mean there is a clear border to each square as it runs across and down. But it is a lovely green. Let's call it 'Bankside Grass'. The third and final gives the least noticeable border, but is also perhaps the most boring. Let's call this one 'Wooden Fly Box'. Any thoughts/preferences/despair?

Hi Jim,
I'm happy to go with the majority but wanted to say a huge thanks for all the little tweaks you have done. Thanks so much!
I especially like the names you came up with for the skins. Excellent work!

No problem!
I suppose the other option would be to go with a flat background colour, like a dark green or something.
There is a part of me that feels the textured tiles are a bit Windows 95 Desktop background.
Like this? I'm pretty happy with this colour scheme - a bit of Devon green!

Hi Jimmyb,
I am probably the worst person to comment as i tend to read the words rather than the background! It probably accounts for the fact that I watch my fly so closely I am unaware of any hatch or fly upon the water! I didn't notice the green until late, but rather fancy the spawning gravel option- could we see that as an experiment? Also, while you are fiddling with the electronic intestines, can you increase the 'show the latest 10 posts' which I use religiously to check up on what people are saying, to perhaps 20 as if I am out for a few days I lose track?!

Hi Paul,
I think you've hit the most important nail bang on the head - the background is just the background, the important stuff is the forum content.
I've changed the back ground to the gravel now, see what you think. The only potential downside to it is that it might make the pages a fraction slower to load - but we can keep an eye on that.
I'll also look into expanding the recent posts list...

Jimmy, Many thanks. Recent posts is almost the only way i view this blog and if I'm away for a few days or someone gets a rush of blood to the keyboard I have missed threads in the past.
