The mays are just startting to get going and fish are starting to pay them attention too. Dead drifting them did work but a little twitch now and again can provoke an aggressive take too.

Lovely. Out of all my usual river flies Mays scare me that they are just too big! But I saw some the other day however and they are big! Make a bit of a plop when they land.

Hi Starsky, didn't see so many y'day but I guess with the mucked up weather we are seeing hatches bunched right up and I have seen some of the biggest large brook dun, medium olives and yellow may hatches I have seen. Really intense stuff and on Mon the fish were going mad in spots that were sheltered and out of the rain even though it was a balmy 9deg c! Hi Rubble, yes they are big old flies and can look way too big and they can land with a plop but that can sometimes be enough to attract a fish too. Going back to talking about larger attractor flies I have been using one pattern almost exclusively at the mo and it has been working really well. We had this beauty on it y'day. Give them a go!

Pete, Good to hear the other hatches are coming along. It's looking increasingly likely that we are driving down this Sun. The weather is warming up nicely and we might just hit it right for the Mays. Last year I did hit it right and the the sight of those fish leaping out of the water after my fly had me giggling like a girl !. You are right though when my big fly( Grey Wulff) hit the water with that plop the fish would clear the water taking it. It still make me smile thinking about it. The Mays are so big that they must make a fair disturbance in the water film when hatching which would trigger that type of response to my fly.
Another lovely fish by the way.

Hi Starsky,
If that is the stream I think it is I saw some big old green drakes there last week and had a nice fish from just under the bridge at the top.
Hi Rubble,
Very happy to spill the beans, fill in the blanks. It's an olden but golden pattern!

Size 14, hope that helps!
