And tied the series last night - they'll need to win tonight to have the best chance back in Boston.
I like it when you get a properly contested series in the play-offs. Last year we white washed some no-mark bunch called the New York Yankees. I think the lack of competition was a major contributor to losing the World Series, that and the designated hitter rule - the National League is a lot more tactical and I think that breeds better managers.

JB, love that one especially the sick deflector! Richard, I think you might find Paul's comments are just a tiny bit tongue in cheek, be careful you are starting to sound like a grumpy old fart! Hey Pete, this will make you smile, we have something in common, didn't you admit to being old and grumpy on this thread, although GN held back and didn't call you a fart! ;D devonrivers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=lodge&action=display&thread=440It must be an affliction us guides suffer from on occasion! Cheers Richard

JB, pleased to hear they are back. Those Yankees are supposed to be quite good!
Richard, that is the most polite GN and I have ever been to each other.
You'll have to be a bit better caster to get me to rise and snap at a fly but keep on trying old timer!

I'd guess you might have, in which case you might like the sequel about the Yankees - Too Much Moneyball! I'm a believer in the principle that, as a foreigner, it's perfectly acceptable to have an American League team and a National League team, did I tell you that I went to Wrigley Field while I was over in September? Saw my first live Grand Slam. So I'm a Tigers and Cubs fan now!

JB, love Moneyball think it is one of Brad Pitts best films along with that other one of course.
I think you need a few favourite MLB teams, I like the Tigers but think I might also like the Dodgers too.
Nice to see a Grand Slam though. Saw Frank Thomas hit one over the Green Monster at Fenway, huuuuuge hit.

Thanks Pete but i will keep my casting for the river, as you say old timer, there is no substitute for experience, but then you must be knocking on the door of 50 now old timer!

And I thought your hammers interest stemmed fro watching Hurst, Peters, Moore etc in the run up to the world cup.
Obviously you jumped on the bandwagon later- after the ball was over!

Paul, apparently I had to be taken out of the room during the game as I was only a few months old and cried through much of it. There have been rather a lot more West Ham games I have cried through!
Like I say approaching 50 I'm thinking of reinventing myself as a fly fishing advisor, much more becoming my dotage!

Hi all, Apologies for my late response, I've been somewhat busy since I've moved but things are now settling down and my thoughts are returning to fishy things. It seems this thread has been hijacked by a load of old gits.. There are some great stories on this thread and thanks for posting. I'm afraid I haven't got much to add in regards to antics on playing fields. However I was once picked to my surprise ( and others)for the football team when I was about 13. The reason being that every other half decent left footer was injured or unavailable. I however managed to score a goal on my debut to the astonishment of every other team player. I even got picked on my own merit for the next few games but sadly I never lived up to my early promise( a bit like Joe Cole). I was then dropped and that was the end of my footballing career. I took up snooker instead and by the age of 18 was ranked 37 in the country as an amateur where I then unluckily lost my sponsor and was forced to find a job. Against my better judgment I found one behind a bar which introduced me to the evils of beer and birds and I never played on the amateur circuit again. I'm writing this on the back of another three goal victory for the Hammers. Let's hope we can record back to back victories with a win against Palace this evening. I always had a soft spot for Palace as that's where I have just moved from but not any more....

Hi most revered Starsky,
Your words of wisdom have been sorely missed, but hopefully you are now happy quietly finning away in your new lie.
As one of the old gits you clearly despise, I am most interested in your choice of noun. I can find three definitions and wonder which one you had in mind as you penned your little piece.
The first is 'pubescent kid who thinks it cool to act like a moron on the internet'. My age disqualifies this definition, but if you had a mirror handy….
The second is 'a contemptible person, often a fool' which given what I'm normally called is pretty complimentary'…..
The third is from the word 'geat' which were a Scandinavian people living in Götaland, land of the Geats, currently within the borders of modern Sweden. Jag skull var mycket glad om det var meningen som du tycke om när du had skrivit dina lilla bitten.
However, I am happy to reiterate my sadness that this fishing forum is occasionally invaded by references to some esoteric east London tribal warfare- or is it support for that form of commercial entertainment, akin to 'strictly come dancing' that overwhelms our broadcast wavelengths?
Any entertainment that can lead 1800 journalists plus TV and radio to go to South America to watch some overweight, overly self important, self styled official take his balls out of a pocket to decide who plays whom sometime next year is an obscene waste of money. A football tax of some 20% would grace the autumn statement!
Best wishes to all, Paul

Hi Paul,
Would I be right in thinking you are not a big fan of the beautiful game?!

Hi Paul, Thanks for the history lesson. In fact your not a teacher by any chance are you ?. The reason I ask is that your style of posts remind me of someone who posts under a different name elsewhere ..... I'm afraid I couldn't translate the foreign language you posted using online translators. I'm presuming it didn't translate as " I'm forever blowing bubbles " I'm happily settled in to my new lie thanks. Interesting use of the word ' finning' , are you a fellow float tuber by any chance ? All the best, Pubescent moron

Hi Starsky,
What a raft of questions!
I was not a teacher- I retired 18 yrs ago at 50- financially comfortable, so not a teacher.
My wife was; she taught Chemistry, and when asked what her husband did she said 'I teach, he makes money!'.
I don't post elsewhere- even putting things here taxes my spelling and technical skills- I only once managed to put a photo up - my big barracuda on trout tackle.
There language was pure luck - I found the definition of a Swedish tribe and, as I was lucky enough to spend two years there in the early 80's and learnt the language, managed to say that I would have been honoured to be counted amongst the said tribe!
No, it wasn't 'bubbles'. The swedish for bubbles id 'bubblier. for the bubbles id 'bubblornas'. I've been away from sweden for thirty years so would hesitate to suggest a translation of 'blow' as it could be misinterpreted. Job is 'jobbar'!
I think, sadly your lie is some way from our lovely streams, but if you ever want company….
Finally, the finning bit. I am not a float tuber but would love to try, but at my age and dodderyness (ask Pete about my attempts to get in and out of a river like a sranded hippo) could only do so under strict supervision.
Cheers, The old git.

Hi Paul,
It seems my conspiracy theory was incorrect then..
My partner is an assistant head in a primary. You've got to love that job to put up with all the crap that goes with it. The holidays are good though apart from the fact that you pay double for any time away. In regards to the tubing I would wholly recommend it. The only time it's a bit harder to navigate is getting in and out of the water. Once your in its a pice of cake and a fantastic way to fish. I have a reputation amongst my fishing buddies as someone who is prone to getting an early bath whilst wading. If I can do it anyone can. It's just a pity that the SWLT don't allow it on a regular basis. I did try various Swedish translations but it came up as gobbledegook. I obviously wasn't looking at the right tribe. Your right Paul my lie is nowhere near any decent rivers and is the reason why I'm writing this message in North Wales whilst on a fishing trip to the Dee. I'm down again to Devon in May. I normally try to catch up with the other Hammer on here if time permits. I think I might get onto Pete to try to arrange a mini social type thing when I'm next down to give be a chance to out some faces to usernames.
All the best, Mark
