The season is upon us once more and the rivers are fining down to a fishable height. I am sure a lot of extra bank work and clearance is required after the terrible storms and floods we have had. I guess the impact may be felt in seasons to come, depending on how the redds fared.
I am out for a cast on the Torridge on Monday, anyone else having an early cast?

Rob I have had brief cast on the Dart and likewise will give the Torridge a go on Sat or Sun. Which beat will you be on?

One of the half moon beats. Which one, I'm not sure yet. I would be happy with Beam.

How did it go Rob?
Hoping to get down to the Taw today to mark the start of fishing there.

Not really Mark, we didn't spend a long time fishing but I warmed up Junction, Timber and Millers for you!

I had a lovely 3.5hrs on beat 9 F&H water last Wednesday. No fish seen, but interestingly the water temp was 8 degrees - that's 46f! When the water is that warm, a cold air temp, which should be the norm around now I guess, can really put the kibosh on things. Luckily it was a mild afternoon and fish or no fish it was great to be out swinging a fly.
Will try again end of April and have a trip to Umberleigh end of March.
Tight lines all.

Thinking ahead to the 2017 season. I have some leave to take in March so I may well have an opening day cast on the Taw. I was also thinking of a few days on the Wye or Hants Avon. Both fish reasonably well in spring and would save the effort and expense of driving to Scotland!
Does anyone have experience of the Avon? Royalty and Somerley are the names that spring up. I would want to fly fish. My only chalkstream experience is the Frome with BarleBlanker- very successful trips I might add but that was summer fishing.

After a bit of research it seems Avon options are really limited to Royalty. It does seem like rather a unique fishery-not sure I want anything too different that early in the season. Wye doesn't really get going until April or May which makes me think I should perhaps stay closer to home- Taw or Torridge, or make the trip to Scotland after all! Decisions, decisions....I must admit to enjoying this aspect of the winter months!

I'll be out on the Mole opening day. I'll try to actually make it to the riser 2017 as well.

I have the second week of March off. I was thinking of a few days here and there in North Devon- Taw and Torridge-to open my 2017 account But then again......having spoken to those in the know/-Davis fishing tackle of Christchurch – I am after all going to give the Avon- Royalty Fishery- a bash in early March. Anyone fancy sharing a beat for the day feel free to PM me. It's fly only at this time, and although the maggot drowners will still be out, it's possible to reserve the better salmon pools. By the way, I have nothing against coarse fishing. It's where I started off. Rob
