Hey all Since registering I've only really lurked in the background so thought I'd start to get more involved. Recently returned from three weeks in Tobago, fantastic place- the most untouched out of any of the caribbean islands I've visited. Didn't get in much fishing as couldn't take any kit with me, but did have two mornings out with a guide. Had some small Tuna and a couple of great barracuda, not huge only 25 lb but still fun. Then had to make the big call- to go for larger Tuna a bit further out or Tarpon.... Only one answer .... Tarpon. Didn't manage to get one, after trying for a few hrs for the last hr we had 3 rods out and two hand lines.... The only take came on a hand, one leap out the water and it managed to spit the hook. Can't say whether I was upset or secretly relieved- what the guide estimated as a 90 lb Tarpon on a handline would undoubtedly left my soft western office hands in pieces. Great fishing off Tobago though, next time I'm definitely taking rods.

Hi Boisker,
Welcome!
Pleased to hear you enjoyed Tobago, it is a real undiscovered gem that fits the family/fishing trip perfectly.
Were you out with Kester?
I fished one flat early one morning where I caught bones, tarpon and had a shot at permit too and was back at the hotel for the last knockings of breakfast.
Pete

I went out with Brendon from FishTobago, great bloke and was disappointed we didn't get any Tarpon so took me out again for 3 hrs for free. Next time I visit Tobago I won't make the same mistake of not taking my own fishing gear. Planning on going to NZ next hols, prob 2 yrs time..... I'll def be taking my rods there! Cheers

I was out in Tobago earlier in the year. Lovely place, took plenty of gear as well. To cut a long story short, I hooked plenty of fish and also lost plenty of fish! I hooked a total of 8 snook off the beach but didn't manage to get a single one in. Got most quite close but they've got a real knack for shaking the hook. Had some small Jacks on poppers, they go like stink! Tried the flats at friendship one morning and only managed very brief contact with one bone so defo something to go back for. As Pete says, it's a great place to go for Family/ Fishing holidays. had a couple of trips out with Kester. On one did really well, caught plenty of Ladyfish to about 5lb, and Cero and Jacks to about the same. Also hooked a Tarpon of est. 40 lb. never known a fish go so ape when hooked! Smoked about 60 yards of line, jumped, thumped around for a bit, then smoked another 70 odd yards of line, jumped about 6 ft out of the water and came off! Again, something to go back for. Probably won't be next year as prices seem to have really gone up for 2015. Fished early morning and sometimes evening so have the rest of the day to do what you like. The Tobagonians are really friendly, open people as well. Left most of my gear with the guys I met fishing the beach!
