Hey all Just been looking at the Dulverton AA and was wondering what people who have fished the listed trout beats think of them... Just looking at the photo's the Perry and Haddeo beats look interesting. Any info on them and the quality of fishing greatly appreciated. Cheers

Well I've not fished them for about three years but half the photo's are mine so it is good to here someone likes them!
The Haddoe is a small and very pretty stream with a good mayfly hatch at this time of year. Grayling were always few and far between but being shoal fish you never know whn you might land on a bunch of them. I fished the (now private) beat above once or twice and saw really good grayling up there (up to 2lb). Water is released fairly constantly from Wimbleball dam at the head of the river and this keeps it full, clear and cool which can be a huge help in hot dry summers.
The Perry beat on the little Exe has some cracking grayling (again not huge numbers) and plenty of little trout. There is always the slim chance of a salmon late in the season, even the Haddeo gave up a couple one season.
The Hollam beat further upstream is a longer beat and was the one I prefered on the Little Exe. It has a better variety of water to my mind, bouldery runs, some deeper rocky pools around the broken weir and a few big still pools where a careful approach is needed.

Cheers for the info, I doubt I'll make it out in the next couple of weeks, so may give them ago in September, they all sound good so if the weather is right may take 3 days off work and have some fun exploring all three of them

I have just joined the DAA as I plan on a few trips to the Exe over the next few months (much cheaper than buying day tickets ). I'm looking forward to exploring the beats and testing myself, and hoping to catch a Grayling or 2.

I had a good tour round the DAA beats this afternoon, by Chris from DAA (many thanks indeed for your time). Really looking forward to fishing these as they look fantastic. The only problem is, I think i'll need to get hold of another rod as one of the beats will need something light and short (6' #2 sort of thing) ... now, how do I do this without the Domestic Chief of Staff finding out?

A nice few hours spent on the Perry Beat of the Exe this morning. Plenty of bites but only landed a couple, of which this was the nicest (and gave a decent fight too) ...

I had a great few hours on the Exe today with Devondabbler. Unfortunately we both blanked but the weather was ok and it was nice to get out on the river. Devondabbler throwing some loops with my new cane rod... And, Devondabbler sporting his new bra pack (picture especially for Billyfish )

Thanks Jim, Great to meet up with you and eI enjoyed your company - also good to be shown all of the beats on DAA water today.
The cane rod is a cracker, puts out a lovely line. Hoping to compare it to Pete's (Luke Bannister) cane rod when we are all at the 'Fox' next - if that's OK Pete? I DON'T need another rod though.
Nice photo's Jim, let's just hope that the 'fashion police' don't investigate this thread!!

Paul, you say you don't need another rod but...
Thought I should mention I have 2 Bannisters. The Superfast which is a perky little number and a Garrison too that is smooth as butter.

I'm going to give Perry a shot tomorrow afternoon. We'll be still under a high pressure system, winds will be light ( c3mph ) and it's looking to be overcast and warm (ish), so fingers crossed all will be good.

Good luck Jim... And I couldn't help noticing in the photo above.. Get some sunglasses or clear safety specs on, I had to pull a hook out the back of a friends neck... not much you can do about that, but you really don't want one in your eye.. That's a gentle google image.. there are some real horrors of hooks embedded in eyes...

I literally just nipped into the river to have a quick cast of my new rod when Paul took that pic, but you're right i should have had them on.

Good to hear Pusser, I assumed you normally would... I'm sure we've all done it.. But I reckon it's those freak 'careless' moments that catch you out if you're unlucky I've done years of chainsaw work, some horrible trees, steep slopes etc... and always worn full chainsaw kit... A few years ago, I went out back just to do a few logs quickly, right by the back door, didn't put my chainsaw trousers on but at the last moment put on my boots... Good call, I nicked the end of my boot with the chain, if I hadn't put them on I'd have lost my toes The only time I've ever caught my boots when sawing! One of those lucky reminders that re-focussed the mind... I always put the kit on again now

Well i had a nice few hours on Perry beat this afternoon. A bit chilly to start with but it warmed up and saw masses of flies hatching, mainly grannom.
I only managed 1 WBT to the net but did get 2 cracking grayling (i won't post pics as i know OOS fish pictures can be a contentious thing).
When i first arrived i met a guy qho had fished the beat all morning and had blanked.
I only saw 1 decent sized trout cruising around but he didn't fancy anything i put in front of him.
A lovely afternoon spent on a cracking beat.

Fished Hele beat today brought two wbt to hand 5"&6" one 15" escapee Rainbow which came as a bit of a surprise, caught a lot of branches and missed takes on another 5, got a lot to learn. A nice stretch to fish quite dark from a lot of trees in places but some nice pools Worth the trek to the top of the beat too Rich
