Thought I'd do a quick post on a trip to the river Monnow on the Herefordshire/Wales border, in part just to raise awareness if people hadn't heard of the auction.
The Monnow Rivers Association do an auction of lots each year as a fundraiser (like the Wild Trout Trust that Pete provides fishing lots in) for work on the Monnow system. The Monnow system has a reputation as having some great fishing but not large amounts of day ticket water.
So I bid on a day on the Ling water on the River monnow.... Knew nothing about it other than it was lightly fished and promised to be a great day.... I won and took my day Thursday.
What a fantastic day, great fishing, a beautiful water, unstocked and only 5 people had fished prior to me this season. In brief caught 10, had at least the same number where the hook pulled out during the fight.... A downside of a size 22 f fly being the fly that worked on the day, nothing bigger would elicit a take until late evening when a spinner briefly worked.
The average fish size was very good, the smallest caught being around 12", and two around 16" caught; the hook pulled out on the biggest two of the day, one a brute which would have pushed my pb of 3lb.
This was the first fish of the day-
fish rising all through the first pool of the beat but it took me over an hour to elicit the first take having steadily worked through my usual go to flies down to the size 22 f fly... First cast with the right fly and bingo fish on, proved to be the fly for the day
Definitely worth considering a bid on next years auction, one of the nicest rivers I've fished....
