I've been giving the snake fly a try. Not had migratory fish on it yet,but I've had some good trout.
I tries a back eddy in a weir pool for salmon, the water erupted and I had a fish of 2lb.
Would love to see a salmon or big seatrout chasing it to get the heart racing.
It is great fun to cast as it whistles past your ear :-)

They stock the river i fish with rainbows (unfortunately IMO) and a snake or zonker brings them from 10ft away. You only need to run it through a deep pool or under the trees and I genuinely think you'll take every 'bow in there!

Taw is losing it's colour and height but looks set well. I had a friend over who was filming me fish the river for day time sea trout and after getting a follow early on, a bump and then a fish chase the fly as I gave it a wiggle when I lifted I managed to catch one of 1 1/2lb in the end!

Well done Pete, that must be the best time, maps the river is falling and clearing. I am going out tonight for some nocturnal action hopefully. Colour seems about right even if still a tad high.

Fished the Bridge Pool in Christchurch on Friday specifically targeting day time Sea Trout. The tradition on this fishery is to long trot maggots or small worms from the punt using a centrepin. Weather was mixed but warm, mostly overclouded. Tides were awkward, running off when we first started but started to flow in again soon and stayed on flood all day. Just started to run again right at the end. This meant almost static float fishing most of the time. Didn't hold the fish back. Maggots fairly redundant this year. Loads of Dace and chub to get bait through before reaching ST at bottom which was much easier to do with worm. Fished first hour wading river picking up 3 (losing 1) st on 14 PTN, 4lb leader, 4 weight fly rod. Fishing heaven. All taken on far side around bushes and just before moored boats start. Tide running out nicely at that point. Plenty of dace and chub to fly too. Dace generally of a good stamp. Back in punt and sport to worm fairly constant during day with never more than 45 mins between fish. Managed a ST on the fly from punt too, a first. Slime line and a black lure. Lost another. Finished off the session as tide started to run again on the fly wading the tail of the pool. Hooked and lost two before It was time to call it a day. All fish between 12" and 14.4". Loads of ST in the pool showing all day. Nothing bigger than 2lbs jumped. Final total tally 4st on fly, 10 (or poss 11) on worm. Lots of other course fish. At least 4 ST lost on fly too, some close to net.

Hi Jon, What a fantastic session, thanks for posting that. It takes me back years when I used to fish the Avon for coarse fish and catch the odd seatrout on bread flake. Happy days. Terry

That takes me back to when I used to trot the Frome with maggot or worm for whatever came along. My best sea trout on the maggot was a fresh June 5lb'er but like you say some days you struggle to get through the dace. Mind you an afternoon catching two dace every three trots is fun now and then! The grayling were good too.
One of my regrets is that I never got to try the Bridge Pool on the Avon while I was living down that way, stupidly I never even went to look at it. Thanks for posting.

This one was from the Tamar in early July. Not targeted as such, in fact I was covering a pod of grilse that suddenly showed in the neck of the pool. My night time fishing has been a write-off this season, so it was a welcome catch non the less!

From the other end of the country... A silver (a bit dark around the head) day time October sea trout from today on a South Uist loch. The killing fly was that good old Devon sea trout favourite the Alexandra albeit a very sparse size 12. Hope to get a few more (and bigger) before the month end. Andy

What a tail!
Its still firmly on top of my wish list to make it over to South Uist, perhaps joint with Loch Hope and the Dionard. I guess with the local geology the fish are always coming in fresh off the sea, even this late on?

Approximately how many of the 20 sea trout caught at the Fox this year Pete would you say were caught in daylight?

I think either 13 or 14 Mark. There aren't so many people heading out at night for them, it's untapped at night.

I remember 20 years ago when I first fished at the Fox the bar was buzzing before everyone set off for their night time sorties. I was too knackered after flogging the water all day! I know how to pace myself better now I also appreciate the value of a hard fighting ST at night over his more predictable cousin. Maybe its time for a revival. A long weekend in June perhaps? Rob

Rob I agree. It would be nice to perhaps team up some experienced night time fishers with some inexperienced ones and see how we all get on. Fill all the beats with ST anglers for a night! After a good feed obviously. And maybe some daytime reconnaissance.
