Hi everyone, A few threads recently made me think we have a fair few grayling anglers on the board and thought it might be fun to have a winter grayling gallery. I'll kick it off with a few from a trip I made out with Lewis yesterday including one of a well behaved grayling!

I have a few outings planned. I'm sat here now just counting down the days for this next one.I can barely sit still and it's driving the Mrs mad.
I have some new ideas to try,new flies, tackle and new pools I didn't get to fish last time,so watch this space as they say.
I'm also hoping not to hook a bloody great salmon again this time.

Lovely picture. I went on Wednesday to the Avon near Salisbury . The bad weather moved through quickly to leave a good fishy day. I landed about 30, mainly on a small bead head under various c d c dry flies. Really enjoyed it and aim to go again early November . A trip to Wherwell is also on the cards. Too lazy to take any photos ,will try harder next time. Colin.

Thanks fellas,
Bosiker, the river was low and clear. We fished far and fine and small flies. It was great fun and really nice to see that there we other anglers out too. At least one of them is a member here, right Ben?
Colin, I am hoping to get to fish the Avon soonish, I had an invite from a friend recently. Hope you take some pics, they are just about the trickiest fish to try and take a pic of on your own though!
Personally I like the smaller fish in the 10 to 14 inches range that are really in their prime and look stunning. Did you get many on dries?

Not to many on the dries despite there being rises all through the day . It's a code that I couldn't crack on the day . There seemed to be lots of small olive flies about but my small olive emerger was ignored for the most part. Must get better prepared before the next trip. The water was at Heale House and has limited availability so I hope to be lucky to get another day there. Off to Twickers now to watch the Blacks v Boks. It's a hard old life. Colin.

Hi Pete. How did you get on yesterday? We found it really tough with only one fish of about 10 inches to hand and a few lost.Bit on the low side there at the moment. We fished it a couple of weeks back and ended up with 25 to 14 inches between us, but it was at least 2 inches higher then.Ben.

Colin, I've worked at Heale House, it is a stunning place.
Ben, we did OK but certainly not a red letter day. It was great to see Chris when we pulled up who told us you were down there too. We decided to head downstream a few miles and fished from there. Although we didn't target them it would have been a really good one if we were after trout and they were in season!

Never heard of Heale House before, looking at some photo's online it looks a beautiful place to spend a day fishing, I guess it's a syndicate water? Although see famous fishing have it as one of their beats.

Hi Ben, Went back yesterday and there was a fair bit of water but it was quickly losing colour. Similar to what you said about last week in that Lewis and I caught 5 grayling between us and although we didn't target them caught a lot of trout. Here's the pick of them

Nice looking fish Pete. I am off to the Avon again on Friday. Can you divulge any info on what dry flies work there.

Nice looking fish Pete. I am off to the Avon again on Friday. Can you divulge any info on what dry flies work there. Hi Colin, I haven't been up there for a few years now and it was during mayfly so choice of fly was relatively straightforward. Down here I have been fishing small flies for risers either a midge of some sort or something in the surface like a shuttlecock style pattern. If I've wanted to fish just a dry and there have been no risers I've been using the parachute coachman in size 14 or a purple haze in the same size. I used to fish the Wylye a lot during winter that is just over the hill, a right turn instead of the left you take, and used to fish a dry all winter and catch plenty of fish. Yeoman, I've been practicing my juggling skills all summer ahead of the grayling season! Pete

Hope they work for you Colin! The river we fished today was pushing a bit so we stuck with nymphs although there was a small hatch of olive uprights and some stones too.
