Thats great news Mark thanks, it's music to my ears hearing people talk about line choices!
Over the last few years I make sure I take a large variety of lines to tuition sessions and spend time working on what works best for the caster, the fishing they are doing and of course, the rod.
Whether it be DH or single hand lines I'd never buy one based on price and although I favour higher end ones I find them fit for a particular purpose and durable too. We have one that has lasted 4 seasons so far of content abuse from grass casting, concrete casting to life on the river and is still going strong. Cost per use would probably outweigh a budget line and life of it by some way so I'm happy to use them for work and pleasure.
Mark, I have the Scandi range from RIO in regular and short and am finding those hard to look past for almost all of my DH fishing.

The only trouble is it's an expensive business trying out different lines (SH for me but the same holds true whatever you're casting).. I've tried about 3 different lines on the 9' 4w I bought last year. Rio Gold, trout LT and the airflo dry elite, I ended up on the gold. Interestingly I went out last night with the trout LT as my gold has a nick in it that needs sorting... and I think the LT now suits me more than the gold- I guess if you're at the point where your casting is still developing you need to think about revisiting line choices. I reckon the gold was easier last year as the line weight is a half heavier and weight profiled to the front of the head so makes loading the rod easier, the LT has a longer front with weight further back on the head- seemed to feel nicer in the hand last night. Interesting- I'll get the gold back on it again over the next week and compare.

You're dead right Boisker, I guess that is why I carry so many so that people can make a choice on what suits them best. I guess it isn't always as easy as that though. When I review a rod I try to give an idea of the lines I have used so that it points people in the right direction but they are hugely subjective. Trying a rod before buying is a logical thing to do along with bringing your line and even better if the shop has some you'll get a good idea but I accept it isn't always easy to do.
I did some courses on a chalk stream last year that one of the guys attending asked me to have a look at the Sage rods that had been gathering dust in his cupboard. We strung up a few different lines and he was happy as anything with the different combos. The line, as you know, can make a huge difference and I think it is often easier to say it was the rod that didn't suit us rather than the line.

I can wholeheartedly agree, case in point: a nice rod that was gifted to me, in a 4wt, didn't perform to its full potential using the Airflo line I had bought, so I was loaned a Rio line to try and it matched very well and was really easy to use. But, even better still is the Barrio line that I bought (due to not being able to afford the Rio Gold), and it now performs even better, it seems to match absolutely perfectly.
Certainly a lesson learned for me.

Dry up until the 1st. River at 0.74m at Umberleigh today so will be ok for Tuesday. Might be fishing a rising river in the afternoon though as (typically) it is forecast to chuck it down on the day, right from the early hours.
We will see.
3 days to go.....................................

I will have to keep my excitement in check until 21st, although I did have a bend in my rod a week or two back on the Tay, alas a kelt. Anyway, looking forward to kicking off my season south of the border at the Rising Sun. I have not fished there before. Any fancy joining me? Rob

I might be there any way as I tend to hang out either there or at The Fox whenever I can during the season, but this isn't as often as I'd like. Julian at the Riser is a great fisherman and knows the Taw very well, so if I'm not about and you need a pointer or two, he'll set you right.
I'll let you know.

A nice photo of a fish would make good viewing at tea time. Colin.

Sorry I couldn't oblige Colin but I gave it a bloody good go!
Here's hoping the guys down stream had some luck, the water was perfect.

I'm glad the water was perfect Pete, I was worried it may have rained to much... I was up at Bradworthy at 9am this morning chainsawing and the roads were seriously flooded in places on the way up there... Not to mention the 2.5 hrs of 35 mph wind and monsoon style rain that greeted me on site.... I guess it was a bit localised.... Back home with a sore back, muddy and soggy clothes.... I'm going back to my office work tomorrow

Nothing from the lower river I am afraid. There was a huge downpour on Exmoor, the Mole was unfishable by midday and the main river at Umberleigh rose 8" in the afternoon, having been perfect in the morning.
It was great to be out though.
