I have a new arrival early June time and am hugely excited. Any other members have dogs and do any of them go fishing with you?
Post your pics if you have any!

We've got a terrier, I used to have a black lab as well, the lab in particular would have loved a day on the river...... It's one of the disadvantages of fishing in England (maybe UK) in that so many waters don't allow dogs. One of my favourite YouTube channels is Kevin O'Hanlons in NZ..... He has a black lab called Meg with him most of the time.... That would make a perfect fishing day for me.......

Used to have a Chesapeake that was always out with me. I gave up taking a net as her obsession was retrieving my fish! Never once broke the skin, and always picked by the tail end. Maybe one day I'll have another!

My Jack Russell doesn't particularly like other dogs so I wouldn't take her fishing. She has a fantastic character though. Meet Roxy (she isn't allowed in the bed ) ......

Im currently training my pointer to come with me. she's only young but trying to get her to hold at the point on the bank where i get in to wade. Only drawback is having to get out at the same point so can't go a long way upstream but that's fine. If it were on a stillwater she'd be with me for sure. Training on hold since thursday though since she broke a bone in her foot and is on cage rest for a couple of weeks. Very frustrated dog!
The dachshund comes with me coarse fishing where i don't wade and loves it, basically a walk for him but with smelly slimy things every now and then!
Mr Jardine has to be the best person to ask about well behaved fishing dogs!!

You are right Toby. I have wanted a lab for a number of years now and it has just got too much to wait any longer.
Funny you should mention Midge, Charles' dog, he was down the other weekend and I asked Charles if he would make sure my wife Emma got to spend time with him. He did and at the end of the day Emma said she thought we should get another dog. Midge has asked via Charles to be my dogs godfather!
Spookily enough a guy who does some work at the Fox has some labs who had a litter 2 days previously and so we went over and chose a boy. We've seen him a couple of times and his eyes opened today so we'll be over again at some stage to see him. I'm really excited.
Emma really wants a Dachshund too so I might tap you for some advice.
Boisker, hear what you are saying about taking the dog fishing. I think there are some spots at the Fox where I'll be able to take the dog and teach too but think it might be next season before that happens but I have scouted out some other places too.

Up on the Dart system would be good.... But TFFC waters and other places I go unfortunately have no dogs.... Maybe something for the future for me.... Hopefully

I never thought I'd have a silly little thing like a sausage dog but he's turned out a gem! There's going to be a litter probably early next year I know about... Had the same kind of luck with my pointer, wanted one for years, never a good time or never any available and then just as i started 2 months in the garden before starting a new job, an unwanted litter of 9 pups came up so i picked our girl up for a rescue price to stop her being "thrown over the wall."

Good to hear Toby and keep me in touch with the litter too!
Boisker, there are some other black labs and chocolates too if you are tempted, good working stock.

Our terrier is 14.5 yrs old and rather likes being the centre of attention, I've mentioned getting another younger dog a while back but Jen doesn't want one whilst the old boy is still around.... He'd get a right old sulk on Maybe in the future...

I tried taking the springer with me a few times. Actually, that's a lie.I used to take him for a walk and sneak my rod and waders in the car when the Mrs wasn't looking. He can't stay out of the water and made it impossible. Black lab has always been top of my list Pete. Now the jack Russell has gone I would love a pup but not sure the springer would appreciate it now he has the run of the house again.

Nice Jezney, there are some black labs in the litter, all females. Just thought I'd mention!
Funny what you say about dogs in river etc as I have a piece in this months ESF from a guy in the US who takes his 3 dogs fishing in pocket water and they are all over the place yet he still has a good time and was catching plenty of fish too. It sort of clinched the deal for me.

You'll soon have him trained up Pete... My black lab always used to look over his shoulder for permission as he charged off to go in the water, if I said no and called him back (someone fishing etc) he always stopped.... He loved the water and would happily spend all day in it.... Would have been no effort to teach him to stay behind me 10-20' so as not too disturb fish in the direction I was fishing.... Alas I didn't fish when I had him....

As he is the wife's pride and joy the idea of taking him fishing with me has come up but the thought of returning empty handed with the excuse of " i didn't see where he went as i was casting to a rising trout" probably wouldn't go down to well.

Well, thats the theory!

After a while you can even give them their own rods . Takes a long time though. Colin.

Couple of you have mentioned having an older dog that might not appreciate a new addition... I've always tried to have old dog + young dog. Then when the old one goes, the young one keeps you going and it's not such a big gap in the house. Young then becomes the older and invariably gets a new lease of life with a pup around. They're meant to live in packs ;-)
Re; Dachsunds - I highly rate Teckels. Have a couple of German friends who have them trained as deer hunting dogs. They sit on their shoulder looking down the barrel as they take the shot, then take off and bark at the place the buck drop. Wonderful characters, great looking, and the rootstock from which dachsies were bred.
My old terrier used to come fishing, he didn't like wet feet much so was perfect.
(Not allowed on the bed either!) The latest is a bit too fond of swimming to be much good as a fishing dog, but she's bloody good in the beating/picking up line: "Bonehill Lass"
Have a retired springer and semi retired sprocker at present as well...
And, like fishing rods, the correct number of dogs = n+1!
