Any sea-trout anglers a heads up.latest spring tides have brought in some fish. My contacts down river have seen plenty of fish coming in on the tide. Colin

Hey Colin I'm not overly well kitted out for sea trout.... A 7w rod I haven't used much with a sink line. I think the sink line would be too much, but don't want to get into loads of lines... In part as I haven't a spare spool for the 7w reel.... So which would be better for the Axe, floater, intermediate or sink tip? I was thinking of a floating line, then I can always get a some airflo sinking leaders to team up with it? Does that seem the best bet?

Floating line is best and add a sink tip if you want to get down .7weight is fine. Cheers, Colin.

Cheers Colin I'm gonna treat myself to a 6w for my NZ trip, which will also serve nicely as my sea trout and reservoir rod in the future.... The 7w I have is ok, but feels a bit sloppier than my other rods so it will be good to upgrade...

Plenty of sea trout running up the Axe. Down at the mouth today lots were seen . Abbey Gate farm should be worth a visit. Colin.

The river could do with a good flush through. Lots of algae building up at the farm.

I was down at Seaton this morning on the turn of the tide and saw a number of sea trout heading upstream. After the recent rain and spring tides it has got to be worth having a go . However I have heard from a couple of sources that the £5 a day fishing at Abbey Gate farm ( Burroughs ) below Axminster has been sold. This is not a definite so it's still worth a look. Colin.

In Axminster today ,shopping ,grrr. Anyway while chatting to an Italian guy in a little cafe he confirmed that the fishing had sold for £25,000. He was told by the new owner ,one of his customers , that he could fish "his" water. I am trying to get a contact number for the new owner so watch this space. Unless,of course, you know something different. Colin.

Shame if true to see this stretch sold off, it does raise the question is the other bits he owns safe or will it be sold to highest bidder and local clubs missing out!!

Anyone fished the Axe recently? I went down to the Farm in May and was one of 7 anglers there that night. Didn't even hear a fish jump. No-one had caught at the time I left.

Called in at Whitford late afternoon for an extremely rare effort at sea trout... probably 3 times in the last 4 years!! The river had risen nearly a metre 24 hrs earlier and had dropped back by just under 0.8m, it was running with a slight colour but I could see the bed when the water was at my knees.... so it seemed like decent conditions. But nothing, not a nudge, follow.... nada Not sure I'm cut out for sea trout, feels a bit hit or miss... but I reckon that's just from not having a clue, I guess people heading out for one of their first brown trout sessions on a river feel the same. But, still fun... a couple of long pools, casting 55-60' with one of Pete's recommended snake flies made me smile

Let the river drop right back, wait for a warm night with no moon, then give it a go. Preferably find a pool with a nice long glide into the tail, deep middle section with overhanging tree cover on the other bank and a fast streamy run at the top. Leave Pete's snake flies at home and try instead something black and silver tied on a 1" slipstream tube. Floating line, 8lb maxima. First cast guaranteed.

I'd have to get to know the pool better before I waded it in the dark, I got a load of ranunculus tied around my ankles and nearly fell over this afternoon Perhaps I'll try the Otter where I know the access a bit better. As I walked back to the car I bumped into a local who walks his dogs there twice a day.... he hadn't seen or heard a sea trout this season, just mullet!..... always get your excuses in early Next season I'm determined to have a proper focus on some sea trout fishing.... although I'm sure I've said that the previous two years

I haven't been out at night either this season. I have picked up a few in daytime which is a bonus.

Brand new leader down to 12 lb point and a surface lure in the dark . I had a salmon in the dark fishing a surface lure around the same time. When you get a good one in the dark brown trout fishing won't be quite the same. Colin

Anyone know how the Axe finished up this Season? I only made it down once. I'm thinking I probably found my limit in terms of enthusiasm v blanks.
