I went over to the Culm this am., before Pusser came to fish the upstream section. The main aim was to give a new rod- a greys streamflex- a workout before a week in Bosnia with funky and his crew.
Went downstream and into the left field to avoid th bovines. Crossed the girder bridge; skirted the first barbed wire fencewith ease, went to skirt the second, but a coil of electrical wire at the base of the post caught my boot, sending me into the barbed wire.
Good news; new rod intact. BAd news, self severely punctured. Tiverton minor accident unit dspecytacular- less than an hour and all sewn up, spare dressings etc and sent on my way.
More serious, tomorrow is a bank holiday Monday and Friday I leave for Bosnia. Checking out my old waders cionfirmed they are uncomforatable, do not fit and, moreover, will no longer go on (and if they did would not come off!). They are not up to a weeks fishing and my lovely current pair of Simms have two serious tears and a 6" line of holes from the barbed wire.
My DIY skills for this sort of problem are negative- so any repair I might make risks frozen whatnots for a week overseas. Panic stations!
A new pair of waders would bear heavily on a budget stretched once to pay for the holiday and twice to cover the new rod. Repair seems the most likely solution- but any repair would be DIY have to last the week.
One previous repair to a big gash in a previous set of waders was effective- but totally wrong because I had glued sonme cycle repair stuff to the outside! Desperation led me, after an internet trawl, to Diver Dav althouth the short time scale was such he could not actually do anything in time for my trip.
I outlined my intended repair together with photo. WITHIN AN HOUR ON BANK HOLIDAY SUNDAY I GOT A REPLY!!!! Full instructions as to how best best to effect a repair that should see me on my way.
Totally impressed- and will send my waders off for a full overhaul when I get back!

It explained Paul, I have a spare pair of old, but 98% waterproof, waders you can borrow if you want to try them on. I can meet you at Exeter services or similar. It's no problem at all. P.S. I didn't fish today as we've had a very, very rare event in that our 4 year old grandson came to stay with us for the weekend (i'm bloody cream crackered now!) Let me know about the waders.

Hi Pusser,
So it wasn't you! I thought it was your car in the upstream slot as, streamomg blood, I drove home from my escapade!
Thanks very much for your offer of spare waders- gratefully and gracefully declined- for the fo;;owing reason.
Not content with free advice on a proper repair to secure my holiday, an exchange of four emails with diver dave, requiring inside leg, chest, waist, height etc measurements (which I would not normally disclose even to friends) led to offers of two new waders at different price levels (but well below makers rrp) to be seam sealed, pressure tested, and dispatched to get to me in Devon on Wednesday from him in Aberdeen as an alternative/ back up in case my imcompetent repars failed.
It is the evening of bank holiday Sunday!!!! Where else can I sing his praise?
Two other little points. TThanks for the advice about cattle upstream. As a confirmed bovinophobe, I shall not take the long walk norht only to return top the car!
Secondly, Mo , I hope you were at the semis and got a ticket to Twickenham. I presume a lack of posting from you suggests over- exuberant celebration! Astounding rugbyfrom thw Chiefa in both matches (as in the other semi) and difficult to see us emulating this performance next year.

I turned off spellcheck as it was substituting all sorts of weird and even undesirable words when I typed the wrong letter. Unfortunately, it no longer helps when I just type rubbish.
Sorely tempted to try dictating to it- haven't dictated since I retired- well I have but it has either fallen on deaf ears or provoked a violent spousal response! After 50 years I should know better!!!!

Hi Paul It was probably me in the parking slot for the upstream Culm yesterday (old Volvo in need of a wash). Sorry to hear of your mishap but it sounds as if you are getting sorted out. There were v few fish moving although a good selection of hatching fly. Netted a v smart 10" BT part way up the beat and hooked and lost two others, one of which was a very good-sized fish. It jumped a couple of times, snarled the leader up in a bank of weed and got off (aaargh!). Not much interest shown to imitation Mays, all took dry Greenwell's, size 16.

Hey bluegrizzle I had the same experience the last couple of times out... loads of flies including mays, but the fish being fussy... spinner pattern rather than a dun has been key to getting regular takes, the fish seem to lock onto spinners and become very selective showing little interest in all my usual dun patterns

Hello Boisker et al
Fished the lower and upper Culm stretches yesterday with only a single splash at a fly (mayfly spinner) which did not connect. The trout have become v dour and fussy in the last few days. Everything seemed right...warm, muggy, v light breeze, lots of hatching fly from tinies up to a few mays but no fish surface movement at all apart from a few dace in the shallows. Tried all shapes and sizes in earlier productive spots, duo rig and single nymph but just the single abortive offer. Some consolation with a close-up view of a Cuckoo and watched a Hobby spooking the Sandmartins on the upper end of the river. I will have to have a day or two on the Yeo or Creedy to restore my average and boost a bit of confidence. Hardy Tim...have you negotiated a leave-pass? I am free on Thursday and Sunday this week.

Good hatches of BWOs on the Yeo ( plenty of sherry spinners in the garden trampoline ! ) fish were rising well the other day to various dries. The Culm does sound like a demanding river reading the posts on here!

Many thanks to bluegrizzle who very kindly guided me for a few hours on the upper beat this afternoon. Despite a couple of heavy showers and the odd rumble of thunder I managed two plump wbt and three feisty dace.

Evening all
Had an hour after work on the upper stretch of the Culm late Friday afternoon. I had the rest of the weekend already committed so just HAD to squeeze in a spell with the weather improving. Water gradually dropping and clearing over the last few days, decent hatching of small sedges and midgey things. Spotted two nymphing fish - spooked the first with thrashy casting but got a take from the second on an unweighted GRHE size 16. Netted a handsome BT of 10''. Great to open the account for the season!
Regards to all Grizzle

Well done John, hopefully one of many for you this season. I've not tried fishing sub surface nymphs for a while now (it's all about tungsten nowadays) but reckon it could be a useful option.

Thanks Tim!
Fishing the Culm can often be a case of 'fishing the water' rather than the 'rise'. The two movers that I saw were both swirling at something (presumably rising nymphs) just below the surface. I had been bouncing weighted flies along the bottom earlier but thought I would try an imitation in the zone where these two could be seen to be active. Very satisfying when it works.
Regards Grizzle

Fished the lower section today in the company of HardyTim, very tough fishing! Hot and sunny with a nasty downstream wind. The wind made casting rather difficult and although some fly life was present it got swept away before any fish moved for it. We managed a few trout and some Dace/Chubb all but one on nymph,( mostly small fish) but I think the thing I caught most of today was the sun! Great to meet up and chew the cud with a fellow angler about all things trout related, last year we fished in a downpour on the Taw and this season in blazing sun on the Culm , maybe third time lucky Tim! Tim putting my casting to shame. Dace or Chubb? No prizes for this one

No Paul I was working at the County Show, It was great as the casting pool was stacked with kids having a go all day and I will not be at the final as I will be in Wales fishing, it's a hard life but somebody has to do it!

First one is a Dace, Second a Chub. Apart from a bloody great mouth on the Chub, even when they're small, the Dace has a concave anal fin and the Chub a convex.

Thanks Yeoman, long time since I caught a Dace but I thought it was the smaller mouth which identified it. No prize I'm afraid!

Any one fished the upper section of the Culm recently. Walked the length of the club water and beyond and saw very little. Understand there have been sightings of otters further upstream.

Had five trout two chub and a dace last week, biggest trout 13", smallest chub 2.5", managed to spook five trout in the tail of one pool yesterday, plenty of fish in there they just arn't coming out to play in this weather, there has always been otters in the middle section good to hear there are more upstream.
