A friend and I visited Whistlandpound a couple of weeks ago and as I couldn't see any reports for the water so I thought I'd put one up.
Having joined the Whistlandpound Fly Fishers (£14 per year provides access to the boat) we met up with Steve Edmonds the secretary on Sat am to be shown around the boat and get the low-down on the lake. Could have done with a touch more wind, but in all other respects a perfect day for traditional loch style fishing. Steve couldn’t have been more helpful.
Almost all our fish came drifting the shore from which the fishing boat was moored down as far as the corner adjacent to the Calvert Trust pontoon with only 2 or three coming from the opposite side of the lake.
We ended up with over a couple of dozen brown trout and one rainbow of about 18”. + half a dozen Rudd one of which was bright orange! All returned.
All fish came to traditional wet flies or a small gold headed spider or leach on the point. Dark bumbles and zulus dibbled on the top dropper were particularly productive.
The water was absolutely crystal clear. There were sporadic fly hatches all-day.
Great to share the water with the some residents from the Calvert Trust who were out canoeing for an hour or so. They sounded like they were having a fantastic time.
There were a couple of bank anglers who were targeting the remaining rainbows down at the shallow end of the lake. We met one of them at the car park who had landed two.
Excellent venue, which is almost exclusively brown trout (rainbows no longer stocked), one of only a handful of venues in England where you can fish exclusively (almost) for brownies from a boat.
