Fantastic day Pete, loads of fun from start to finish.... and nice the fish were playing ball. In fact I enjoyed the duo so much it's convinced me to give it more of a try next time I didn't get many photo's, whenever I thought of it I'd realise I was straight into the sun again, but I'll check later and post a couple...

Definitely a case of enjoying the last days of autumn.... temps seem to be slowly dropping and wind has moved around to NW and then NE, could start slowing up fly life and the chance to use a dry. Hopefully we'll get a few more mild days before it changes properly Dave.... river Tone, TFFC waters

Matt I'm still on the TFFC waiting list and probably have at least another year or to to go. I did try Wellingtons water earlier in the season but it was badly overgrown making access difficult.

Hey Dave... how long have you been on the waiting list? I think it was 3 seasons wait when I joined. typical club there are quite a few who never fish at all, hopefully there'll be a bit of a turnover this year and you'll sneak in. If I know I'm heading over in advance on a weekend on the run up to Xmas I'll give you a shout, but it's looking like I might struggle, I seem to be booked out nearly every weekend. If not remind me to arrange a day in the new season, Hillfarrance Brook was very good through May & June this season. (Possible Jan, but if it's anything like last Jan it will be washed out... I'm away fro Feb). Sorry, we were meant to go this season... time just slips by and I've a memory like a sieve

Matt this will be about two years, I did send the secretary an email before the end of last season and he advised that I'd probably still be waiting another 2-3 years. It's not that bad because I've just got into the SDFFA, (services dry fly fishing association for servicemen and ex serviceman). They have 6 miles of prime beats on the Avon just above Salisbury so I'll be heading over that way for some Grayling fishing when I get the opportunity to get out and once the season gets underway again.
It's good news and I'm already looking forward to the season as it'll be a new learning experience fishing chalk streams.

Hi Daveb I noticed you mentioned ATAA on the other site, are you a member? I am and am yet to bump in to anyone else fishing apart from during june!

Toby I'm a member of Merthyr Tydfill, Darlington Brown Trout and now SDFFA. You could say I'm well travelled, however I have family in the north east and DBT gives me some good waters to fish when I'm visiting I'm on the Taunton waiting list but not a member yet.

I looked into the SDFFA but found it was horrifically expensive. Some lovely water but id have trouble justifying the fees to my long haired colonel!

Pusser
I'm not sure where you get horrifically expensive from as I found SDFFA to be very competitive and significantly cheaper than the majority of clubs offering premium chalk stream fishing. The water is steeped in tradition, with Sawyer being the river keeper and many of his and Kites writings based on the SDFFA waters. Access is superb and they have a river keeper you can ring any time for updates. If you consider that if you join Avon Tribs, it'll cost you £348 for the midford, wellow and cam brooks, SDFFA is a bargain. You need to bear in mind that the SDFFA waters are considered to be some of the best on the river.
I've been today and I've had a superb day catching on both dries and nymphs. I've always been reserved on my opinion about chalk streams, particularly price wise, however after today when it's 4 degrees outside and fish are still rising to dries, I'm not going to complain, particularly when I almost had the river to myself.

If I were ex-services it's where I'd be heading.... stunning river. Is it stocked Dave?

Just looked at the website... supposedly lightly stocked, but healthy wild BT and Grayling. Looks like a stunning 6 miles, some great photo's on the web album. Get in there Pusser, most other clubs have hedge waiting lists... Dorchester over 10 yrs and Salisbury game section about 7... Even for a few years would be worth it...

Matt
Yes, like many chalkstreams it is stocked. I had 2 OOS 2 lb fish and quite a few between 1 - 1.5lbs in addition to some smaller WBT. Plenty of grayling but surprisingly the biggest was only 3/4lb. The leaves on the bottom and weed did cause problems and although fish were rising they were difficult to tempt as I don't think they have made their minds up yet as whether they want to be up or down. The bigger trout all came to a pink tailed GRHE jig.
If the rules permitted more than one fly, (apparently a meeting has been arranged to look at the rules), I have a feeling I'd have caught considerably more fish. As it was I took quite a few fish on the drop by casting the full FL and laying and watching the indicator on the water with a lighter nymph

Yeah... it's always a challenge finding the balance... I let one of my Frome syndicates go this season as I had too many other commitments... Perhaps one for the future
