Courtesy of uk T board Almost certainly a grass snake. "Natrix natrix ★★★★ This timid, non-venomous creature is a beautiful sight if you're lucky enough to spot one. It is a striking grey-green with a blue-black forked tongue. It also has a yellow or orange collar, bordered in black. Male grass snakes can grow to one metre in length - females even longer. Both have large golden eyes from which a black stripe runs to their top lip, and a white or pale yellow underside chequered with blue-black markings. Although this snake has nine sub-species, only the largest, helvetica, occurs in the UK, and only in England and Wales, where there is an estimated breeding population of 320,000. Where they live Close to water to support their diet of toads, newts, frogs, water voles and small fish. They tend to live in well-vegetated areas such as river banks, ditches, and compost and grass heaps. Grass snakes are good swimmers; they swim with their head above water so can be spotted in ponds - especially in the south of England. (Unfortunately, if disturbed they can also stay under water for up to an hour.)" source www.theguardian.com/environment/2008/jun/07/wildlife.grass.snake

popped onto the Tone for an hour after work yesterday... river obviously still very low, needs a good flush and loads of leaves floating down to catch... but the water was very clear for the Tone and the river aside from the above caveats was in great condition. Did a bit of duo and then some single dry fly. Picked up about 7 fish... from memory five of which were grayling... and a really nice average size grayling most around the 12" mark. They are still pretty dispersed but the decent size bodes well for when the temps drop and they start to shoal up a bit more.

River in good order today... which made it a shame that for large periods my fishing didn’t match it. Not sure why, I guess just one of those days where I was a bit dopey, tripping over my feet and generally not very focussed. But the river was still pretty kind and the fish obliging~ Average size of the grayling I guess around 1/2-3/4 lb, the three largest bang on a lb and as an ‘estimate’ somewhere between 15-20 caught... I know not exactly accurate, but I did say I was feeling dopey Couple of hours nymphing, having really enjoyed it a few days ago for some reason I felt slightly less enamoured with it today, but will stick with it for a while as my technique is definitely improving. But as last time... I found some rising fish just below the bridge pool... so off with the nymph and a bit of dry action to finish the sesssion. Last fish of the day a fussy customer, 3 changes of fly and more importantly multiple casts eventually getting a completely dead drift... a 1lb slice of silver.... nice

Fished the Tone late afternoon Wednesday, first time this season I think... Not much fly life around... started on dry, moved on to duo... picked up 3 or 4 below Hele Bridge, but it wasn’t really feeling great. Nearly went home when I got to the bridge, but luckily I thought i’d fish the first few hundred yards above the bridge back on a dry.... good call! 4 14” grayling immediately above the bridge, 3 days out of season, but I couldn’t see them so hadn’t targeted them, also 2 trout from the same stretch. Picked up another 8-10 fish, grayling and trout then went home... all a really good size, a couple more 14” grayling and 3 trout around 13”... Not sure why I hadn’t fished the Tone this year, I guess it’s so much easier to call in the Otter... must make a point of getting up to the Tone again soon

Had a few hours on the Lower Bradford beat this afternoon. When I arrived there were quite a few flies hatching off but not much activity from any fish but, I decided to stick to dry fly only (my favourite method). It was definitely the right move as not long after i'd started fishing the fish began to rise. Within 30 minutes i'd caught 4 small brownies and the rises were becoming more frequent and steady.
I decided to keep moving and in the next pool i had 2 lovely grayling (yes, I know they are out of season) this was a surprise to me and, although OOS, a real delight - my first grayling on the dry fly!
I carried on but the hatch died off and the activity abated quite a bit, but after just a few hours i'd had 9 small WBT and 3 decent sized grayling, plus plenty more that I lost after hooking or that just thrashed at the fly. Really enjoyed fishing the beat and the water, although slightly cloudy, wasn't running too hard.

I've had a few outings so far this season on various beats pf the Tone and I have to say i've had some real success. From 14" oos grayling near to Bradford-on-Tone, to stunning little wild brownies near Wiveliscombe it's a rive of many 'faces'. Fortunately I had a couple of beat walks with a club regular so now know where to get in and out of various other beat sections, so i'll look forward to fishing it a lot more over the coming weeks/months.

I had a lovely morning on the Tone at Bradford today. It was a really successful trip with 23 grayling, 9 trout and 1 dace to hand. The grayling were mostly over the 6" mark with 2 really nice fish (both PBs), the first of these was about 12", and is in the picture below (though not the best pic) and the second was around 14". My best days fishing yet! I'm really pleased with how I fished today - everything came together really well, I was casting consistently and really enjoyed using a nymph in the traditional style.

Another cracking session on the Tone this afternoon, with a PB wild brownie to boot, this beauty came in at around 14" or so (apologies for the water on the lens)

I meant to post last week... the Tone is fishing really well, or I just caught it on a good day.... 40-50 to hand, mostly Grayling, but also including a few decent sized os browns. Most of the day ‘euro’ style, but switched to dry for the last hour. A really good average size of Grayling knocking about, the one below is fairly representative-

It was about time Pete I had a few great weeks when we were first allowed back out fishing... then sort of lost my mojo for much of the rest of the season... I kept catching poor weather and then just to make it really unproductive fished as though it was the first time I’d been on a river . This was the first time I’d felt really engaged and on my game in ages.... not sure why, strange season I guess.... I’ll aim to get back out in the next week or so, before the cold weather turns it into dredging heavy nymphs....although work is busy so could be tricky. I reckon that Oct-Nov period is my favourite in the Tone... Grayling in great condition, still taking dries and nymphs in riffles/faster currents.... I never really enjoy the nymph fishing once they are just sat in deeper holes / pools.... I may have to look into a bit of Pike/Perch fishing this winter...
