I heard today that a springer came out of water by the Rising Sun the other day...anyone else heard more details?

Nothing doing on beat 9 of the Fox & Hounds today Thanks for sorting me out Pete, sorry I didn't hang around to see you, hopefully next time. A couple of huge rain storms came through followed by the mother of hail storms which took some of the fun out of proceedings! The beats look good and I'd like to see them under more favourable conditions, the little Dart was coming down like dilute pea soup and the Taw like not so dilute tomato soup Ah the joys of spring fishing Thanks again. Andy Ps. Snowing again in south Somerset tonight

Had a couple of hours for trout and managed a couple of small ones on nymphs. I bumped into a really nice guy fishing dries who hadn't had any luck and so I popped up a few beats and had a go for salmon. Nothing to report on that front.

I had today off and popped down and had a fish. Fishing went in spells again where the hatches would be pretty short affairs and the fish would switch on and off with them. I was really pleased with the fish below as he was in tight on the far bank just out of the main flow so getting a drag free drift was a little tricky. He was happily taking emergers and I thought the klink might tempt him but he hit the nymph. I'd moved up a fair way and saw a couple of fish rising. I cast at what looked the better of the two fish and got hit first time. Apologies for the quality of the photo but he was a bit of a handful and I wanted to get him back as quick as poss.

Looks like you got some nice fish there,Pete. I fished the Yeo a bit this week and found it similar, suddenly a few fish rising, and then nothing.Could really do with a bit more water, though. Still, saw a few black gnat today so hopefully we'll be in for some sustained rises soon.

Hi Ben,
same again y'day. Started at 1ish had a nice 10 1/2 incher and thought "here we go" picked up a few more and then died about 3ish again. I fished NZ rig and it always felt like we were fishing the nymph rather than the dry.

Was on the Taw at the weekend and activity was spread throughout the day with spasmodic rises. Colleague I was with managed to catch an escaped rainbow...or was it a steelhead?

I was on the river with a guest y'day and we caught the first fish of the season on a beetle. Every time the wind blew we'd see two or three fish start moving and then stop again. On went a foam body beetle and the fish started hitting it.
Fish didn't seem to be paying much attention to the black gnats despite the huge numbers of them and we also saw a couple of mayfly too.

Had a quick couple of hours on my way home from work this afternoon. I fished a beat that screams salmon and sea trout but with the low water there are some nice little spots for trout too. I haven't trout fished it this year so thought I'd give it a go. There was plenty hatching including mays and iron blues but black gnats got the fish more interested. I'd re tied some scruffy klinks and started with a size 14 but seeing the gnats went down to an 18 and had a few fish. I also hung a one of my brand spanking new flash back pheasant tails on NZ style and also had a few fish like it too. I didn't connect with anything huge, an 8 incher was the best, there were some really overgrown bits that I really enjoyed fishing but think I'll have to get the saw out soon to get a better shot at a few I saw and couldn't get to!
I had a really good hit from what I think was a sea trout Sun night further down the river and if the weather holds I'm going to have a quick look again tonight.

June 1stWith nearly half the season gone I thought it was about time to give the club water a bash. I was hoping for a mayfly hatch but I think I might have been a bit late. There were a few trickling off all day though and the fish were still willing to have a go at one. The first pool gave up an 8 incher. This fish took the fly as I was stripping it back from a slack backwater where the wind (or was it my iffy casting...) had dropped it. Quickly after came a little one and then it all went wrong for a bit. I fished up through three fields without landing anything. Very few fish were rising and most of those looked like parr. I missed a few and had one better one fall off. Time for a brew and a tactical re-think. While waiting for the kettle to boil a fair few fish showed in the pool but again they all looked like little things. There were by this point millions of black gnat over the water but nothing seemed interested. So after tea I went downstream to one of the bigger, deeper and rather still pools to sit and watch in the hope that something worthwhile would turn up. Again all the rises looked like tiddlers but I chucked my mayfly at them anyway and was surprised to get an 10 incher and two 12 inchers I wonder how many of the other little rises might have been big 'uns now The best two. Hackled Mayfly. It's not (that) big and it's not clever (but it works!) Andy
