I think this is an age-old question, but how much backing does one realistically need for playing Salmon on rivers like the Wye or Tamar ?
I'm new to Salmon fishing (have caught a few Sea Trout at night but never Salmon) so I have no idea what to expect from playing one.
I was given a 9-11 Orvis Mirage Reel for Xmas and have loaded it with a Greys 7-8 shooting head + running line, but I'm finding I can only load 100m of gel-spun 30 lbs backing with enough space to safely wind the line in. I could shorten the running line and load more gel-spun backing if needed, but I'm not sure it's worth doing ?

For the rivers you mention I am sure that would be fine. Tay or Spey I would always want the reassurance of 200 yds. Rob
