Opened my season on the Taw today, running quite fast but clear good hatch of olives 1300-1500 just warmed up a bit, found fish at the tail of slower pools very splashy rises but managed 4 BT 8-10 inches, missed a lot more.
Highlight of the afternoon was a otter saw it twice, second time it seemed to be catching fish in riffle above me. It worked its way down turning stones and jumping about oblivious of me, watched it for a good 10 minutes until it got within a rod length's of me then just slid pass me in the current. I've seen a lot of otters over the years but never had one get so close or been able to watch it for so long.

Hi treefella, I fished the Taw as well this afternoon (Taw Fishing Club stretch downstream of CFFC water) - I fished 15:30 - 17:30 - Very cold no sign of any hatches or fish rising. I managed two nice fish in the end (11") - I had a tungsten nymph on the point and a March Brown wet on the dropper and I was upstream fishing. Both fish were caught on the dropper. I missed another couple of takes - so a nice start to the river season.

Temperature started to drop about 3pm and the fish just stopped moving. You only get a small window this time of year.

Had a few hours here today to start my season , some ldo's and grannom hatching Unfortunately the fish failed to respond and after two hours of fishing the duo without response I capitulated and changed to tight line nymphing. This brought me three fish in half an hour but despite this success my heart just wasn't in it , I decided to switch to dry fly and just enjoy being back on the river. One 8" fish made my day by taking my ldo CDC dry but that was the only rise I saw today. The Taw in today's spring sunshine

Fished here from 6 till 9 last night. The river was low and clear and seemed completely devoid of life until about 8 o'clock when the sun went off the water and then the fish started to rise to my imitation ( or they just couldn't spot me as easily). I went on to take 17 fish in an hour or so plus the usual missed takes and lost fish , great fun. Best fish 11".

A beautiful fin perfect 13" WBT from the Taw last night, a really strong fish that actually made the reel sing twice! Not much of a photo as it was a bit dark under the trees at 9pm. Lost a huge fish on its first jump in the pool with the ladders top and bottom, still thinking about it ( I know the brain plays tricks on you but it made a hell of a splash as it fell back into the pool).

Hi Chris,
Might have been a sea trout - I had one on the Taw a couple of seasons ago that was just over 19" - Took a dry fly on a sunny afternoon - caught it in a deep shady pool.

Hi Paul, funnily enough I just spoke to HT in the Crediton shop and he said the same, it would have been nice to have got a closer look.

Might well have been, never fish for them but I've had a few up there, always in July and August. One problem with them is that you can have a devil of a job keeping them out of the low hanging branches!
