Many thanks Roy. I certainly picked the season for it! Worst trout fishing May weather wise that I can remember. Still some beautiful places to go and fish though, I often think I'd be happy just to go and walk them so any fish are a bonus. Lower Creedy, Culm and loads of the Yeo still to film time permitting. Chris

Never mind Lilliput Chris, I was thinking more of Apocalypse Now with those huge fallen trees blocking your way and bodies falling in the river. You sure there weren't any tigers behind you?! Very impressed with your casting in such tight spaces. Johnny

Very impressed with your casting in such tight spaces. Johnny Cheers Johnny. That's because I had to cut out all the tree trout I caught because of the expletives 😕 Had a couple of hours on the Yeo this evening in the company of new member Pete. Very tough fishing with little rising but I did manage one nice 12" fish

I've just watched that latest video back again, and the squirrel sequence (including your reaction to it) is absolutely cracking me up. I'm sure all the rodent lovers will want to hear that he swam off safely after his unintentional high dive.

Happy to report that both members of the squirrel Tom Daley impersonation team were unharmed by their exploits. Never seen that before in 40 years of fishing and then twice in three days. On two different rivers. Weird.

They have mouse years in New Zealand which brings up the really big fish so perhaps we might have a squirrel year this season. Some years ago at Colliford I saw a squirrel trying to swim across the lake. He thought better of it after about 30 yards and swam back shook himself off none the worse for it. Bizarre.

Anybody have an opinion on how to imitate Aphids? Or if its even worth trying?

Plenty of helpful stuff for us small stream enthusiasts to chew over, thank you Chris. But I'm not sure you need to worry about tying on a size 26 aphid, your hit rate looks pretty good to me. I must try that backhand cast, just the job for a tight space, and your presentation is great. Do you overline the rod to load it at short distance? Furled leader?

I must try that backhand cast, just the job for a tight space, and your presentation is great. Do you overline the rod to load it at short distance? Furled leader? Yes I like to use a 5' thread furled leader ( home made out of 12/0 thread for dry flies and 10/0 for duo/ streamers and large dry flies). Generally for lines I go for the ones that say brook or creek or small stream, these tend to have shorter head profiles and load the rod with less line out. Just my personal preference, I've tried to stay clear of too much "tackle talk" on the videos, I don't think there is a right or wrong way to do it, if you're enjoying your fishing (and it's allowed on your fishery) then it sort of is the right way. One of the joys of this lark is that you can develop your own little tweaks that might just make a difference, occasionally. If anyone is interested I could try and film the furled leader jig, it's a bit "Heath Robinson" but does the job. Chris

Many thanks for posting. It is a special piece of water for me for many reasons but like you say, the Taw can often be a harsh mistress and it is one of the reasons I love that river so much. When it all goes right you forget about the tough days!
i do fish aphids but tend to use them later in the year when the leaves are falling. I don't know what the mayfly was like there this year but I do find that fish can be a little lethargic in their rising soon afterwards no matter the hatch and it takes a week or two for them to get back in the zone again.
I spoke about how the fish rise on the Taw recently and when guiding would say on the river to my guests that they are going to not connect with a few but it was the way things were. I am always surprised how you can spot a fish gently sipping, you make a cast and it explodes on the fly that doesn't always stick although I have a theory on that, that I won't bore you with this time!

Fishing the Yeo downstream of Uton Bridge. This time I had a cameraman!
As Terry says Pete keep the podcasts coming, really enjoy the "on the water" ones, great to get an insight in to how a couple of guides approach their fishing.

Golf course section this time above Kersford bridge. My first time fishing here and it was really good despite the time of year.

Fishing a still dirty river Creedy. Been a bit of a theme on this river this season.

Another little gem Chris, you did really well there I enjoyed that not easy at all. The river did look a tad dirty as you mentioned. I’m not used to seeing any colour as I mainly wish the east or west dart which is hardly ever coloured. The fish didn’t seem to mind too much though and all looked in good condition. It has been a strange season to be sure. Keep the vids coming they are appreciated.

Tried the Creedy at tea time yesterday. Have not been out for a while and first time here this season. Forgot tocpack the 5'9" and struggled with the 8'rod in the late summer growth!
Very low water, quite silty. Nothing rising at all. Infested with pond skaters (is there a season for these?). Tempted one fish briefly with a deer hair Adams but it shook it off. Another launched skywards trying to grab a streamer I tried in desperation but did not connect. Found access hard with new fencing down the rugby club side.
Also saw what I thought was a lone mayfly near the top. Think it missed the party. Global warming hey.
