Ventured out for the first time this season yesterday. Went downstream of Dunscombe bridge.
Is it me or is the algae the worst I've seen it in several years? It's over everything. Just appalling really. I'm really worried about the obvious nutrient overloading killing everything. Wondering if a flush of rain would make a difference.
Only one fish seen rising. Saw some minnows/ fry which gave me some comfort. Managed one wbt on an olive nymph below the bridge.

Your right Rubble it's particularly bad this year. I fished at the very top of the CCFC water yesterday at folly Bridge and there was lumps of the stuff floating about in the stream. You wonder how any invertebrates survive? Prolonged dry and sunny weather hasn't helped but it would be interesting to know the levels of nitrogen and phosphate in our streams? Perhaps as a club we should invest in a tester and start gathering some data?

I'm guessing pretty bad. Natural England recently issued guidance re nutrients across loads of protected areas including the Axe, which is failing due to excess phosphates. Can't approve anymore houses in the catchment for the foreseeable. Areas whose rivers aren't designated it's business as usual i.e. crap farming practices and sewage dumping. I'm not optimistic for the future.

It's been bad on every river I've fished this season. I suspect the relatively dry winter hasn't helped. However, the Trout numbers seem to be about right.

Just a quick note for anyone planning a last minute session on the Yeo at Uton Bridge. You can no longer fish under the bridge (a quick visit for me involved fishing below then under the bridge uo to the railway bridge). Barbed wire has been fixed across the river with posts driven into the river bed. Quite what they think will happen when we get our first winter flood I've no idea but if they plan to leave it there it will cause a trash dam and/or get washed away. Anyway you now have to get out and walk around .

I had a nice fish from the Taw on Thursday despite the low water, a nice way to "almost" finish the season. Has anybody else managed a last minute session?

I echo Rubble's post which started this thread.
I went out yesterday for the first time this season (don't ask!), downstream of Salmon Hutch.
The brown algae covered everything, the river hardy moved and seemed dead, the vegetation made getting in and out even more difficult that an oldie normally has.
I blanked of course, but the casting held up well considering it nearly a year.......

Great fish to finish the season Chris! After a miserable blank on the Duchy a couple of weeks ago I had one more crack at the East Dart which generally has been kinder to me than the West branch of the river. The tree cover and valley sides helped to nullify the downstream breeze and I was pleased to get a few small fish up to 9ins or so, all on dry fly. Lots of sedge hatching but hardly any rise; water crystal clear as usual and no slime or algae thankfully. I also had three salmon parr which hopefully bodes well for the future. All the best to those of you who haven't quite put the rods away yet! Johnny

I've fished the Yeo for the last ten years and been a member of CFFC for the last five and it has always been there. It comes and goes with conditions but was there a time when the phosphate levels weren't an issue? I only fished the Teign and the Moor before and never saw any of this stuff so don't really have a base line to see if or how much deterioration there might have been.

UNIt was certainly bad- nothing in the way of level rise to wash it away for a long time, I guess, but others will know better than I.

Another good video Chris thanks for taking the trouble. You have done very well in my opinion this year considering the crap year it’s been. Mike Weavers commented in this months T&S magazine “in over half a century producing this report it is the poorest season he can recall “ Let’s hope that next year fares better.

Some success on the upstream section of the Taw yesterday with a few brownies coming to a para Adams. Some pockets of rising fish but all ignored my offerings and all my fish came from fishing blind the runs into pools instead.
Some kingfishers seen which was lovely. Otter prints in the mud, I've yet to see one.
The damage caused by the trees being ripped out is starting to heal a bit with summer growth. There is also a puzzling and amusing margin of pumpkins on the walk back from the top.
Not sure I'll get out again.
Also nice to see two large Salmon at Trews Weir on the Exe in the morning, both looked in good health. A guy was fishing them and I could see him cover one of them bit it did not budge!

Yeah the pumpkins do look a bit odd, not exactly looked after are they, just growing wild! Some of them are pretty big though, should be ready by the end of October for you know what.

Great video Chris, as ever, and a lovely trout ! I had one of 13ins from the exact same spot back in mid July, see photo, maybe its the same one with 1/2 inch of growth ! Despite the heat and drought (and a dire lack of rising fish) I have had a few nice ones including another of 13ins from further upstream on the Taw, in August.
But best (so far, hope to fit in another day on the club waters) was a beauty of 14ins from the Culm.

Could well be Roy, I doubt there are many of that size in our stretch although I had a 12 and 11 from the same pool earlier in the year. That particular spot always looks like it should hold some good fish. Never made it to the Culm, AGAIN, how did it fish this season? Still plenty of little Chub I suppose?
