The Peninsula Federation held our regional qualifier on the Teign on Saturday 10th May for the top anglers to gain an invite to fish in the national finals and ultimately gain a place on the England fly fishing team. River was up,colored and pushing at quite a fast pace making wading very little fun and finding fish a pretty tough task. After not getting round to fishing the teign at all this year I knew I was going have to think outside the box if I wanted to stand any chance at all as everyone else had been out practicing on the river previous to the comp. After 35 minuets and no fish I started to think I would be in the bottom few anglers until a change of plan came. I had my french leader on so I lengthened my tippet, put on Two 3 mm tungsten bead flies and cast hard at the water to help get them down.It was a slack spot against the bank next to a seriously fast bit of water so I knew it was the only place any fish were likely to be (either there or tucked up under the rocks which is harder to fish for) Dead drift had not brought much luck so I tried jigging the flies and suddenly I was onto my first fish, thank God and I had found my method that saw me land 6 fish for a 4th place in the afternoon and possible entry to the national finals and dropping 3 fish as they got into the fast water and 2 at the net. This picture is of my best fish of just over 30cm which is a wild fish caught well upstream of the stocking areas. Highlight of my day.
