Hi all,
I've recently moved to Devon and live just upstream of Exeter near to the Exe. I have luckily got some fishing in the Thorverton/Stoke Canon area and I'm looking to bank my first ever Salmon (against quite long odds, I admit). There does not seem to have been any recent activity on the Salmon part of this forum which perhaps means that little is happening. I can report nothing at all from 3-4 trips so far but my lack of experience does not necessarily mean that there's nothing to be caught - though I have not seen a fish either. In any case, I'd be glad to hear of others' experience on the Exe or elsewhere.
Cheers Steve

Hi Steve,
I'm possibly interested in some fishing in that area- any clues, hints or even intelligence?
Cheers, Paul

Hi Steve, If we get some rain, it should bring a few fish in. There were a few around last year from about mid July. PS Don't tell Paul about your fishing, he can afford to go to Bosnia with a new Streamflex and has Simms waders,so he might push the prices up! Ben

With the 500 yds by Bickleigh Castle advertised at £100,000 and a one- eleventh share of a stretch by you at £60,000 I'm not in the right league!
£10 a year for the Tivvy club is more my mark- I save up my pennies in a jar!

Hi Paul and Yeoman,
I got the last rod in a syndicate that has some fishing in my home area. It was lucky really. I got contacted by someone via a forum (when I asked for fishing info) who told me that they were about to give it up. Although people talk about the Exe as being poorer than previously, the main advantage for me is that I can walk to the river and fish and that's really pleasant. I've seen the stretches for sale and it's eye watering - i'd have to drive to Bickleigh too! I'm also going to join RETA to have the chance of a few different beats throughout the summer. It looks like a very good scheme.
Cheers Steve

Steve,
it would also probably be worth while you joining Dulverton Angling Association, they have beats on the Exe around Dulverton and it's very cheap to join.

Thanks for the link, Paul. Not many Salmon around Devon, either, and no fish farms. I think it's a factor in a much wider picture.

Hi guys
Huge decreases in the rates of returning smolts over the last few decades indicate that marine mortality is the key problem for salmon, and farming is probably an important factor in many areas. However the real hit from aquaculture has been to the seatrout stocks of the Scottish and Irish west coast systems which in some cases have collapsed completely from a previous state of good health. Unfortunately the seatrout is not such a political animal as the salmon in terms of its cultural profile and economic worth, so this disaster has stayed largely under the media radar.
Cheers
Johnny
