Hi all,
I'm agog to hear of the 20lb+ monsters landed this w/e!
First, thanks to Terry and Pete for ideas for a thursday near torquay. In the event he weather was **** so I did my chauffeuring job without wetting a line; same friday.
Today was perfect- warm; sunny; no wind; just right!. However, I have a conscience! As I haven't been able to find a proper job for the last 13 years outside of a few voluntary ones, I felt, as usual, I should give up the prospects of an idyllic day on the rivers in favour of those less fortunate than myself who are gainfully employed.
Thats my excuse! In fact the need to grow food intervened and I spent the day planting onion, shallot, peas, parsnip, lettuce and a variety of other foodstuffs in that environmentally friendly system that allows 90% of the crop to the birds, slugs and snails and the grotty remains to myself and Margaret.
Still, it ekes out the income!
Like to know how everybody fared as I'm vaguely thinking of having a full day on the Culm tomorrow. Get there, kit up and walk to the bottom of our (CFFC) waters. Spend an hour recovering and then working gently back to the car. It would take an exceptional day (or the presence of the Tyjas guru) to then tackle the upstream bit particularly as Martgarets's Auntie has stridently let it be known she has no trout fillets left in her freezer- so I've got to find a little pond and catch one for the pot!
Tot ziens, Paul

I managed to get out fishing on Chew after Pike with the PFFA on Sat and had a good day.
I landed 10 to 11lb and lost as many.
Am looking to get out mid week on the Tone or on a Devon river if i can but do have an invite to fish in Wilts.
A friend fished the Culm last week on the TFFC water and blanked and that is rare.

Paul, I saw a few grannom on the water yesterday...don't forget last year I was working over the weekend but managed to grab a couple of hours on the Bray. It looked stunning and was running crystal clear. It meant I could spot fish and I was amazed how many were still sitting paying no attention to either my flies or the naturals that were coming off. I headed upstream and picked up a few on a pheasant tail nymph and saw one really nice rise which looked like a good fish. I didn't get a chance to cover it as a heron just upstream took to the air and I think might have spooked it. I waited for a bit but he didn't rise again. I took this photo from a higher spot and it was covered in wild garlic. The smell (if you like garlic) was delicious. I took this fish from my favourite run. It doesn't look much but always throws out a fish. It is a little paler than a typical Bray fish which usually have more yellow to their bellies.

GN, I put the photo up so you could see what a wild fish looks like ;D Ben, the next logical step must be the upstream wooley bugger I had a couple of hours on the Taw y'day downstream of CFFC water. Nothing looked at the dry at all and I had to jump out as a lady had walked her dogs upstream of me and thought the Taw was there for her 5 dogs to drink and bathe in as many pools as possible, I asked her if the dogs had been swimming and she said "no" despite a braggled specimen standing next to me. I did manage a fish from a hole I have always struggled with in the past depsite it looking so fishy so I hadn't fished in vain. I headed downstream a little further and had a really nice session. For some reason I had my phone with me which I never usually take and it rang while I was fishing. I got it out to hit the ignore button but it was Toby M. I thought I would tell him I was fishing and we spoke for a bit and I learnt another good reason not to take a phone fishing. I had the phone in my right hand and I cast with my left hand. As is always the case a fish took and funnily enough it is a bit tricky trying to take the slack out of your line when the other hand is on the phone...it was sort of a long range release!

;D ;D ;D Its amazing what you can find to talk to someone about when they are trying to fish and you are stuck doing paperwork. T

I spent five hours flogging the Culm on Monday wit my enthusiasm fired by Toby's tales of his friends success. The weather forecast was garbage! As I arrived, the temperature dropped to about 5 degrees not the15 forecast, As for the 0 mph winds, a chilly hortherner blew in my face all day. Not a hint of a rise, no sign of any fly life and no fish! However, things perked completely yesterday with this lovely 19" brownie!

I thought I better give a bit more detail about the monster.
The weather was infinitely better- warm and windless and I had thought it would be perfect for my first trip to the Taw this season.
However, Margaret's Auntie had let it be known in strident voice that she had no more trout fillets in her freezer s I headed to the Exe instead.
There is a delightful little bend in the river on the Bampton bypass with a very sympathetic riparian owner, Mark Underhill. He's a dedicated salmon angler with several beats on the Exe but, unlike some, is very tolerant of us trouties.
This bend in the river always seems to yield a couple of very good size fish such as the one above if not bigger. Its quite expensive at £20 a go but you normally have the place to yourself and its very picturesque.
Its called Duvale Priory, has a sign saying 'fly fishing available' at the entrance and is about 2acres with a central island. At least Auntie has trout for the next couple of months!

Paul,
Fabulous fish.
In nearly 30 years of fishing I've not had too many 19" browns. (2 in fact) Forgive the question but is it a brown, it's got a bit of a peal look about it?
Terry
p.s. Don't worry about the proper job it's not what it's cracked up to be.

Dear Terry,
With marginal reference to today's date, I can assure you it was a brown as peal don't normally get into the Exe- and if they do certainly not into stocked lakes where this one came from!
