On the first day of WBT season, just had to get out! Blessed the river with cider for fish to come. No luck today and so good to be out!

Opening day on the Otter. As with the above not much going on but good to be out. Practiced a bit of casting to blow away cobwebs, haven't picked up a rod since last October,I was atrocious but still it's early days. Cold easterlies beat me in the end. Only sign of life on and in the river was our resident.............cormorant. Sat and watched him for a bit he's a big bugger and also quite brazen. Whatever you think of the black death you have to admire his fishing prowess. I now know where the fish are holding....sorry were holding !! This vermin has the potential to wipe out the majority of resident fish in what is a relatively small but productive beat. There isn't a solution to this menace as far as I am aware. Another note of concern is large clumps of foam sporadically coming down stream. I am not sure where they originate from or if they are pollutants but this is something that needs to be monitored. I have taken some photographs of it but am still trying to get to grips with downloading images onto the forum.

what are the chances of you guys on the Otter getting an "area based management licence" to control the black death? hughmiles9.blogspot.co.uk/Scroll down to cormorant v roach.

It will be a long road to be able to carry out Cormorant control Steve, to be successful it would need to be demonstrated that the population of cormorants is causing the fish population to decline... so ideally there would need to be fish caught records for a number of years. Keeping records can seem a pain for clubs but it is something that can be very useful, for problems with predation, effect of pollution incidents. Something to raise at a future AGM? For control to be successful it would also need to be assessed at a catchment level, with the most successful approach likely to be through an application from Otter Fisheries Association... which will be tricky for a number of reasons. But something for the future perhaps

We're all doomed boisker. With regards to the AGM's they can be quite painful. The future doesn't look great. Good idea about catch returns thou I've been meaning to do this for a while. Total fish caught to date.....NIL 😬

At least with the Ottery Club there aren’t that many members so collation of returns wouldn’t be that hard
